I was reminded of this today. Not long after I was elected Mayor of Annapolis Royal, I found myself defending our town and its history on the national news - e...xpressing my anger and concern at the CBC's television miniseries, Canada: the Story of Us; and its failure to include the historic importance of Annapolis Royal and area in the early origins of Canada. Despite the Habitation at Port Royal being established in 1605 and recognized for centuries as the first permanent European settlement in Canada, CBC chose to rewrite history and transfer that title to Champlain's 1608 settlement of what is now Quebec. CBC declined to remedy the situation, and so I proposed the making of an independent film to tell OUR story - resulting in the Port of Origins film project currently seeking funding. It was in that context that I later learned that the Government of Canada planned to close their state-of-the art Archeology Lab in Dartmouth and relocate thousands of artifacts from Nova Scotia to Quebec. Including many artifacts from Annapolis Royal. It felt like we were now going to lose the physical evidence of our role in the early origins of Canada. In my capacity as Mayor and a tireless advocate for the preservation and promotion of our history, I visited the archeology lab and met with Parks Canada archeologists to share my concerns over the proposed closure and relocation of artifacts. I was accompanied by (then) Annapolis Spectator reporter Lawrence Powell. His subsequent newspaper coverage of my visit and concerns was picked up by other media outlets - generating wide exposure of the Government of Canada's plans. Others publicly opposed the closure - including Atlantic members of parliament. Ultimately, our lobbying resulted in the Government of Canada's reversal of the proposed closure. On hearing that news, Powell was there to record my reaction, which exemplifies my attitude throughout my life. But most importantly, my attitude as Mayor of the Town of Annapolis Royal: Sometimes things seem so big, or inevitable, that people don't step up, but nothing is impossible. No matter how colossal the challenge, you do what you can and hope things work out. It doesn't mean you're going to change the world, but it doesn't hurt to believe in the possible. Like so many communities, the Town of Annapolis Royal faces many challenges in these times of COVID-19, sea level rise, and economic uncertainty, but I continue to believe in the possible as we move forward together. https://www.saltwire.com//annapolis-royal-mayor-relieved/
