Cedar Hopperton, an anarchist organizer in Hamilton, has had their parole revoked for making anti-police remarks and "inciting violence" at a public meeting. Ev...en without any other details, this is obviously political repression, but the context makes it much worse. Cedar made these comments at a LGBTQ community meeting following Hamilton Pride, where yellow-vesters and other fascists disrupted pride, then assaulted festival-goers. The police did nothing to help, and in the end several people were injured. In response to this, Cedar proposed that queer and trans people defend themselves rather than relying on the cops, who had just days earlier demonstrated that they were unwilling to provide protection. So, following these comments, Cedar was arrested, along with three people who defended Pride from the fascist attacks. No fascists were intially arrested, despite having filmed themselves carrying out their attacks. Justifiably enraged by politically-motivated arrests, a protest was organized outside the mayor's house. That same day one of the protesters was arrested, and others were taken in for questioning or otherwise harrassed. In contrast to the five people arrested for being on the side of queer and trans people, only one fascist has been arrested. His name is Chris Vanderweide, and he lives in Kitchener.. His arrest came only after the Canadian Anti-Hate Network filed a criminal complaint forcing their hand. Before they got around to arresting him, Chris was filmed committing another assault in the Eaton centre at Toronto Pride the following weekend, and prior to the attack one of the fascists can be heard saying "Let's get into a big fight inside the Eaton Centre" in the video they made So let's review police policy here. Fascist are free to film themselves planning to attack people. Fascist are free to actually carry out planned assaults. Fascists are free to hold bigoted demonstrations whenever they want. Queer and trans people though seem to fall under a different policy. Get attacked at Pride by bigots and defend yourself? Go to jail. Advocate for self defence when the cops won't help? Go to jail. Protest your comrades going to jail? Go to jail. Fuck the police. They have shown once again that they are the enemy.
