March is National Nutrition Month! Nutritious food does much more than just satisfy hunger. Having a well balanced diet can help improve your sleep, help fight diseases, improve your brain function, and help accelerate recovery from an injury! One of the biggest culprits that can affect your health is excess sugar intake!... Here are some of our favourite tips to help you reduce your sugar intake: Don’t drink your sugar! A glass of orange juice contains 5 teaspoons of sugar, a can of pop has 10.5 teaspoons and medium Tim Horton’s Hot Chocolate has 12.5! Replace these with naturally flavoured or plain water - they both contain 0 teaspoons! Only put half of your normal amount of sugar in your coffee or tea throughout the day Eat fresh or frozen fruit instead of canned fruit in syrup Replace the sugar in your recipes with vanilla, orange, or lemon extract Swap out your white bread with whole wheat bread Swipe right for some more healthy lifestyle tips from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and share with us in the comments below what your favourite go-to nutritious snack is!

Can we talk about the weather these past few days?! Spring is coming and one of the most underrated ways to enjoy the nice weather is by walking! Many people believe that walking isn’t an intense enough form of exercise to bring about health benefits, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Studies have shown the benefits of walking in participants afteronly 10-30 minutes of walking per day! ... When we walk, large muscles in both our upper and lower body become engaged as well as core muscle to maintain our posture. Engaging these muscles increases our heart rate and the demand for oxygen in our cells, resulting in a number of short term and long term benefits! These include: improved weight management improved cardiovascular fitness decreased blood pressure improved mental health - walking releases endorphins, the brain’s feel good chemical! improved blood sugar control ease joint pain improved sleep The best part about walking? It can be done anywhere, at any time and at whatever intensity you desire! Choose a different route each day or explore a new part of town that you have never been to - the choices are endless! We hope you will take advantage of this beautiful March weather and get out for a walk - you won’t regret it!

Another local business that we have worked with many times over the years, Grand River Glass! Mike and his crew from GRG installed our safety glass for the front desk at our Trailside clinic last week! This is the perfect addition to our front desk to help keep our receptionists and patients safe while still maintaining the beautiful appeal of the reception area! Thanks Mike and team, you did a great job as always!

We want to make sure that just because things are different right now, that kids are still getting out and being active! Getting your kids participating in physical activity doesn’t have to be complicated, it just has to something that gets their heart pumping (preferably for 10 minutes or more)! Children who are active experience physical benefits such as a stronger , bones, muscles and joints as well as many mental health benefits including greater self-esteem, h...ealthy psychological development and better focus and concentration in school! Did you know that less than 50% of Canadian children meet the recommended activity level for optimal health and development? This is a trend the wrong direction! With all of the current changes to sport programming and the transition to online learning, we can only imagine that even more children have been decreasing the amount of time they spend being active each day! Here are some suggestions for activities around the house and outside to keep your kids active during online learning: obstacle course made with household objects (cans of soup as pylons, snow shovels/brooms to jump over, balance beam made with painter’s tape) snow frisbee hide and go seek (hide stuffed animals around the house if only one child is playing) build a snowman shovelling snow - getting your kids active can even be of benefit to you! Hot Lava - spread sheets of paper over carpet as kids jump from stone to stone Be sure to tag us in your photos, we would love to see all of the different ways you are getting your kids active while they are at home #physiotherapy #physicalactivity #kids #active #onlinelearning #fun #physio #health #mentalhealth

The start of a new year is always one of our favourite times because our patients come in telling us about their fantastic New Years resolutions and goals that they have set for themselves to achieve! From drinking more water, spending more time playing with their grandchildren, to training three times a week to prepare for their first half-marathon, our patients have big things in mind for 2021! What would be even more fantastic is if staying on track with our goals w...as as easy as creating them! On average, 80% of people stop striving to reach their goals by the 2nd week of February. One of our goals at Grand River Physiotherapy is we want to help you stay on track this year and make your resolutions long term changes in your life! Some tips to make your goals stick: make your goal specific! Say Drink 2L of water per day instead of drink more water have someone keeping you accountable! You’re more likely to stay on track when someone is cheering you on (this can even be one of our physiotherapists!) make your goals positive! Say you want to get stronger rather than you want to lose weight write down your goals on a piece of paper and look at them everyday as a reminder! We want to know what your goals are! Share your goals with us at your next appointment or in the comments below and let us know how we can help you achieve them! Let’s make 2021 our year to shine!
