We’re not superstitious- we love crossing paths with black cats; on Friday the 13th, and every other day for that matter!

An unexpected but much appreciated gesture from one of the many Winnipeggers touched by the story of Zed, our miracle puppy patient recovering from a knife attack. We are so grateful to Anita and @bakedbypreciouswpg for these beautiful and delicious treats. We do the work we do to help the neediest among us; receiving generous gifts like this is just the icing on the... cookie

This has been a week filled with challenges and stresses for many of us. Fortunately, there is a fairly effective antidote to election anxiety and pandemic angst- it’s puppies and kittens! And we’ve been seeing so many cuddly new family members, our spirits remain buoyed! (The hard part has been giving these cuties back to their owners!)... It has been a lot of fun meeting so many wonderful pet parents filled with excitement over their new additions. There’s really nothing like the antics of a puppy or kitten to distract from all the chaos of this crazy world we’re living in. Have YOU got a new furry friend in need of veterinary services and want to join in on the fun at Grant Park Animal Hospital? Fantastic! We’d LOVE to meet you! Just give us a call at 2044778600 or email [email protected] We hope our new friends below help to put a smile on your face

Today is World Rabies Day. Rabies is a serious disease affecting both animals and humans. Despite decades of vaccination aimed at eradicating the disease, someone in the world dies from rabies every nine minutes.... Rabies transmission and prevention depends on the actions of people. You can reduce the possibility of your pets being exposed to rabies by not letting them roam free. Children and adults should be cautious around unfamiliar animals, even ones that appear friendly. Most importantly, any domestic animals like dogs, cats, horses and other species that live alongside humans should all be vaccinated against rabies. Rabies is a fatal, but entirely preventable disease. Be sure to keep your pets current on their vaccinations!

Grant Park Animal Hospital was proud to serve as a Silver Level sponsor of the Winnipeg Humane Society’s first ever Treasure Box fundraiser, which sold out in 26 hours and raised thousands of dollars to help support the life-saving work done by the wonderful people at the WHS day in and day out!

We’re always there for needy animals from Manitoba’s north. This weekend, our staff volunteered their Saturday off for a huge vaccination clinic organized by several rescue groups in the province. 43 dogs and puppies (and one cat) traveled south from the communities of Moose Lake, OCN, and Pukatawagan, to be examined by Drs. Kraemer and Watson and given vaccinations and medical treatments. They were then loaded up into a van and driven east to Ontario, where they will soon b...e adopted out through a local foster-based rescue organization- and they were all so cute, we’re quite sure they won’t be in rescue for long! A tremendously rewarding collaboration between our hospital and an outstanding group of dedicated volunteers. We will never stop working to improve the welfare of dogs and cats from Manitoba’s isolated communities in the north

Grant Park Animal Hospital is proud of our partnership with Community Veterinary Outreach, a phenomenal not-for-profit organization that offers human and animal health services to homeless and vulnerably-housed Canadians all across the country. Our own Dr. Jonas Watson is one of the regional directors for the Manitoba branch of CVO who helped bring this unique program to the province several years ago. Our staff was pleased to participate in a COVID-conscientious CVO One H...ealth clinic at Giizhigooweyaabikwe Park in Winnipeg’s Centennial neighbourhood this past week. We met many wonderful pet owners that afternoon and were able to provide both vaccination and deworming to the animals, and dental health services to their humans. A truly rewarding experience for all involved!

Thanks so much for the shout out Winnipeg Humane Society! The WHS is an organization near and dear to our hearts- so much so that our very own Dr. Watson will be taking the reigns as Chair of their Board of Directors at the upcoming WHS annual general meeting on September 9th!

At Grant Park Animal Hospital, our staff are always happy to help animals in need- even to volunteer on a Saturday night when 30 homeless dogs and cats in transit from Thompson to Toronto need health checks before leaving the province. We’re so thrilled to know these beautiful creatures are all on their way to finding wonderful homes with loving families. This is why we do what we do.

Meet the all-star Grant Park Animal Hospital team! Dr. Jonas Watson was a film studies major when he received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba in 1999. Since graduating from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006, Dr. Watson has practiced companion animal medicine all over the world. Dr. Watson is a consultant for many animal welfare organizations and a regular contributor to local and national media. He is the immediate past president of the M...anitoba Veterinary Medical Association. In that capacity, he was proud to have spearheaded discussions on the elective declawing of cats which ultimately resulted in a provincial ban on the procedure. Dr. Watson is the incoming Chair of the Winnipeg Humane Society’s board of directors. He is a long-standing director on the board of the Canadian Animal Blood Bank. He serves as Manitoba’s regional co-director of Community Veterinary Outreach, a program that provides human and animal health services to homeless and vulnerably-housed communities. He is well-known for his frequent travels throughout northern Manitoba and Nunavut to bring veterinary services to pet owners in need. Dr. Watson was also one of the founders of Winnipeg Vegfest, an annual festival that celebrates compassion for animals and environmental stewardship. Dr. Watson has a special interest in exotic animal medicine, including ornamental fish. In addition to offering services to aquarium fish hobbyists, Dr. Watson provides veterinary care to the aquatic residents of the Club Regent Casino’s saltwater aquarium, including a small breeding group of endangered nurse sharks. Dr. Watson has been recognized locally and internationally for his efforts to improve the health and well-being of all animals, particularly those in remote and isolated communities. In 2019 he was one of six recipients of the World Veterinary Association’s Global Animal Welfare Award.

Meet the all-star Grant Park Animal Hospital Team! Dr. Tim Kraemer’s veterinary experience dates as far back as his time spent working as a clinic assistant while still in high school. Dr. Kraemer earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba in 1997. He subsequently spent many years working in the human medical field as a cardiac ultrasound technologist at the Health Sciences Center. ... In 2006, Dr. Kraemer graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. Once in practice, Dr. Kraemer used the diagnostic imaging skills he’d acquired on the human side to master the art of veterinary ultrasound. Over the past 14 years, he has built a robust ultrasound referral service for pets and sees veterinary patients from all across Manitoba for cardiac and abdominal scans. Dr. Kraemer is an empathetic and attentive veterinarian who will take the time to understand his patients’ needs and their owners’ concerns. He is a meticulous diagnostician with a loyal following of long-term clients. Dr. Kraemer’s is not a face you will find on social media very often so we know his legions of fans will be delighted to see this post! He is eager to reconnect with his clients and patients again at the new Grant Park Animal Hospital. We anticipate some very happy reunions over the coming weeks!

Meet the all-star Grant Park Animal Hospital team! Dr. Chris Bell’s day job is as an equine surgeon, who works day-to-day at Elder’s Equine Clinic improving the health and welfare of horses in Western Canada. Dr. Bell is an adjunct professor in equine surgery and sports medicine at his alma mater, the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in Saskatoon. He is a well-published researcher and popular speaker who has presented at conferences all over the world.... Dr. Bell sits on the council executive and is Vice-President of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA). He chairs the CVMA Emerging Leaders Program and serves as Manitoba’s Advisory Committee Liaison to the WCVM, among other roles. For his many contributions to the profession, in 2019 Dr. Bell was the recipient of the Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association’s Award of Merit. Dr. Bell has been able to extrapolate from his knowledge of equine sports medicine to other species, such that he now provides the same cutting-edge treatments for musculoskeletal problems to dogs and cats as he always has for horses. These include tendon/muscle/joint/ligament ultrasound, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, platelet rich plasma therapy, Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IRAP) therapy and stem cell treatment. Dr. Bell works closely with many veterinarians in the city and looks forward to partnerships with clinics around the city and province to be able to provide these services for their clients. These techniques can improve comfort and mobility in both canine athletes and family pets. Dr. Bell will offer these services on a referral basis, either in-clinic at Grant Park Animal Hospital or at your pet’s regular veterinary hospital as needed. Dr. Bell also brings to GPAH years of experience in practice management as the owner of Elder’s Equine, where he will continue to spend the vast majority of his time treating horses (don’t worry horse lovers, Dr. Bell will NOT be leaving Elder’s; he will still be providing high quality primary and referral vet care to his many equine patients, as always). As a respected leader, a well-credentialed veterinarian, a community advocate, and an all around great guy, Grant Park Animal Hospital is very lucky to have Dr. Bell on our team!
