On the first Wednesday in May, Albertans are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. Participating schools will relax ...their hat rules and encourage students and teachers to build understanding by wearing hats to school. Students will also participate in a coordinated lesson on understanding mental health and the importance of removing the stigma associated with mental illnesses. See more

So this week all students did a traditional activity and creating Psysanky: Ukrainian Easter eggs. Students created their own designs using a kitska and heated wax and learning how to dye their eggs by layering the dye. A HUGE shout out to Ms. Brandy and Kayla Cloutier for donating duck eggs for this!!! #avschools #grasslandcommunityschool #traditions #psysanky #eastereggs #creative #talented

Aspen View Public Schools is proud to have many ‘homegrown’ talents within our ranks: former Aspen View students who have remained in, or returned to our divisi...on as employees in various capacities, helping to educate, inspire and support the current generation of learners. 'Homegrown in Aspen View' highlights these Aspen View alumni who are now 'paying it forward' within our communities. Homegrown in Aspen View: Katelyn Gerlywich My name is Katelyn Gerlywich. I work as an Administrative Assistant at Vilna School. Most people know me as Kate, and to students I am Miss G or My G. The shortened version of my name stems from growing up in a small community, attending a small school with four other ‘Katelyn’s’ in your class, with the same name all spelled differently. I was raised on a cattle farm northwest of Vilna. I attended Vilna School from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and graduated in 2008. Throughout those years, there were many people who influenced and taught me, and now I get to work alongside some of them! Some honorable mentions include Jennifer Machetchuk, who was my high school Biology and Chemistry teacher, my airplane seat partner when we flew halfway across the world, and now a co-worker who never hesitates to answer my many questions, and reminds me to stop working after hours. Another teacher and now friend is Sherry Rubuliak. She taught me to get out of my comfort zone during Drama classes and be true to who I am. I will also never forget the Outdoor Education winter camping trip in junior high, and how the girls had the best camp shelter and stayed warm, while we listened to the boys whine and complain for 3 days from their camp. After graduating from high school, I worked towards a diploma in Animal Health Technology, and graduated from Lakeland College on the Dean’s Honor Roll. Five years later, I enrolled at Red Deer College to receive a certificate in Medical Laboratory Assisting. I worked in the laboratory environment in Edmonton until March 2019, when my mom passed away. My mom’s passing was a large contributing factor for me choosing to come back to the farm. There is just something about a small, rural community that you can’t find anywhere else, and working in a small rural school allows you to make connections that can’t be replaced. Vilna School may be small, but the staff here are kind and always willing to lend a hand. We do our very best for our students and families, and strive to make sure everyone feels heard, respected and included. Our students learn the importance of having a community and contributing to it, about various cultural differences, and that working hard and being kind is what will get you through life. We all come from different backgrounds, we all have different beliefs, and there is always something to learn. I am proud to say I live and contribute to a community I grew up in. So incredible and warms my heart, coming into school today and we have one of our students making our school safe for everyone else. This young man choose to do this and showed leadership! After I took this picture he got another helper and did the whole sidewalk around the school. Thank you boys! Cougar paws for showing respect and kindness for thinking of others. #avschools #grasslandcommunityschool #shovellingsnow #futureleaders #loveourlittleschool

Bullying Awareness Week is November 16 to 20, 2020. It is a time to promote awareness and understanding of bullying and its impacts. Bullying is a relationship ...problem that involves a power imbalance, which is why it can be so challenging to overcome it by ourselves. Regardless of where bullying happens in school, the office, at home or in the community there are people and resources that can help. This year’s theme, #WhereToTurn, encourages everyone to learn where to turn when dealing with bullying. Here are a few ways you can take part in Bullying Awareness Week: - share bullying prevention resources on social media - the Bullying Helpline (1-888-456-2323) is available 24/7 in over 170 languages - start a discussion with your friends, family or coworkers about how to intervene - write a letter or email to the editor of your local newspaper or radio station about the importance of promoting healthy relationships
