This summer we are volunteering to prepare meals at Margarets House in Downtown Dartmouth. Last week it was Michaels turn to help out at lunch time!
Yesterday we took off early from work to let off some steam by axe-throwing. Michael took first place and Kathleen was runner up. Thanks to the employee engagement committee for organizing this event!
G&R CPA had three ducks in the recent duck race in Lower Sackville. Kudos to Kirby - his "darth vader" duck won a trophy for best decorated duck! And one of our other ducks was first to the finish line! The funds raised from this event went the Sackville side of the Boys & Girls Club, the Sackville Rivers Association and Acadia Hall.
Please join us at our annual Christmas open house on December 6, 2018 from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Clubhouse at the Old Ashburn Golf Club!

Here is some of the feedback we received: - great ideas to be a better bookkeeper - a nice way to meet up with other people and learn about different topics We received other feedback as well that we will incorporate into next years seminar. Thank you to all who joined us!

We spent the last couple of days at the CPA Canadas "The One" conference. It was a great opportunity to check out the new Nova Centre - impressive! Had a chan...ce to get the latest updates in accounting and technology. Lots of networking too, finding out what our colleagues are up to in other parts of the country. See more

Last Thursday was a great day to be outside enjoying a round of golf at the Lebanese Association of Nova Scotias annual tournament. Our game was consistent with prior years and we received a prize for being the most honest team, for the third year in a row!
We met a lot of students at NSCCs career fair yesterday. We are fortunate to have several NSCC grads on our team who were able to give advice to students looking to start a career in accounting. Steven and Amy also spent time with students finding out about their goals and discussing the career paths available to them.
Merry Christmas from the "Guns" at G&R CPA!
Judging by the attendance at our bookkeeping seminar last week, the event was a success. We had over 85 guests and more than 90% said they would recommend this event to their colleagues. It feels like weve set the bar high for next year!
Happy Halloween everyone! And a special thank you to Mario & Luigi for brightening up our office today!

It has taken a while for the opposition to the tax increases proposed for small businesses to gain ground, but it is good to see the pressure is mounting on the government to reconsider its proposals.
We share the opinions about the governments proposed tax changes in this editorial from last Fridays Chronicle Herald. A significant number of our clients stand to be negatively impacted by the proposals. We stand with them opposing these changes.
The Lebanese Chamber of Commerce in Nova Scotia recently recognized G&R CPA as "Canadian-Owned Business of the Year". In accepting the award at the Chambers 10...th annual Cedar & Maple Gala dinner, in front of 600 guests, Steven personally thanked the Lebanese business community for their contribution to the local economy. Steven told how he had to move to Ottawa to start his career in accounting. As our business grew at G&R as a result of our connections to the Lebanese business community, the opportunity arose for him to return and continue his career in his home town. See more
Now that our tax season is over its time to catch up on our posts! Lawrence recently contributed an article to the Business Voice, a monthly magazine published... by the Halifax Chamber of Commerce. The idea for "Building Trust in Business Relationships" came from a meeting we held with our Client Advisory Board, a group of ten clients who volunteered to share their advice about our services and the future direction of our firm. http://halifaxchamber.com/publications/april-2017/
Join us for our next Monthly Morning Networking! Wednesday, March 15 from 8:30am to 9:30am at the Office of the Canadian Celiac Association - Nova Scotia Chapter and co-hosted by G&R Chartered Professional Accountants. Hope you can join us!
Michael was invited on Tuesday to encourage first year business students at NSCCs waterfront campus to choose a specialization in accounting. An alumnus of NSCC, Michael enjoyed being back on the campus. "Its a rewarding profession," he told the students, "one where everybody counts." All joking aside, Michael did a great job representing the profession and motivating students to consider following his career path.
A lot of our clients have investment holding companies, which usually invest the proceeds from the sale of a business that they spent years building up. This research suggests there may be long-term (30 year) disadvantage to this strategy. The researcher made some significant assumptions so the conclusions do not hold for everyone. If you have any questions about your specific situation please let us know.
Lawrence made a presentation about the future of bookkeeping to a group of entrepreneurs at the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Development in Halifax last week. The most interesting topics were how the Bank of Canada CAD-coin project might impact small business as well as how social media and big data analytics might impact the accounting function.
Renting increasingly makes sense as an alternative to buying a home in cities with expensive housing markets. Steven recommends this book to landlords and anyone who questions whether home ownership is always the sensible choice. Spoiler alert: renting costs you less than owning, and if you invest the savings you get from renting, you have could have more money to enjoy life with less stress.
Lawrence and Steven welcome Amy to their partnership, G&R Chartered Professional Accountants (formerly Rector Colavecchia Roche). We appreciate Amys enthusiasm and the experience she brings to G&R, says Lawrence. Amys promotion has also been embraced by the rest of the team at G&R where she has been a manager for the past five years. Amy knows how to relate to our staff, explains Steven, and she is great at building relationships with her clients. As a partner Amy plans looks forward to building those client relationships and expanding her client base in HRM.
