Such an interesting history!! Posted @withregram @orbea The love story between Orbea and racing in the Basque Country started long ago. Our region and cycling have an undeniable relationship that has lasted for more than a century, not only shaping us as individuals, but shaping our bikes and innovations, too. Back then, the town of Eibar, Spain, wrought with a complex history, saw the birth, growth and transformation of many companies in the firearms industryan industr...y that taught us how to adapt as we evolved into a bike manufacturer. In the same way, the region’s cycling culture was changing and adapting to a new era. At the time, sports were very closely linked to the production of bikes, which shaped Eibar into a hub for racing. After various cycling clubs were established, renowned races, such as the Subidas a Arrate and the Bicicleta Eibarresa, were born, the latter of which merged with the Tour of the Basque Country and is known today as Itzulia. As this cycling story began to emerge in the Basque Country’s Bajo Deba region, additional stories of the area’s first races and champions began to unfold. Mariano Cañardo, our first great champion, wrote Orbea’s first winning story in the Tour of the Basque Country, with many incredible cyclists from this territory adding chapters ever since. Mariano has been followed by many: Miguel Mari Lasa, Peio Ruiz Cabestany, Marino Lejarreta, Mikel Landa, Omar Fraile, the Izaguirre brothers and many other greats that came to Euskadi to train like Purito Rodriguez, Samuel Sanchez and other cyclists who were forged in a territory suited for this sport.
