As we wrap up our 2020 Hometown Market season, we would like to thank everyone who made it such a success. We appreciate the patience and cooperation we received from our vendors and visitors as we adjusted our rules, regulations and protocols to ensure that this year’s Hometown Market ran smoothly, while prioritizing the health and safety of everyone. With your continued support and dedication in following the COVID-19 protocols, it was possible to host the Market while keep...ing our community at large a safe place. The COVID-19 contract tracing that took place every Market day indicated that an average of 221 visitors attended the Market each Saturday! Our vendors reported a 90% success rate in consistent and regular customers purchasing products from them each week. Thank you to the community for shopping local; because of your support, all the vendors are planning to return for next year’s Market. Greater Napanee is a wonderful community that knows how to come together to support one another and show community pride. Meet our Featured Vendor for this week - Hannah's Maple Syrup! Don and Karen Hannah started making maple syrup in 1993, thinking it sounded interesting and that it would make for a good hobby. Over the years, they expanded the amount of syrup they made and continued to develop their equipment as well. This is Don’s favourite part of what he does, constantly having something to challenge himself with, whether that be in the form of developing new recipes or building his own eq...uipment where possible. For several years before coming to the Market, Hannah’s held a pancake breakfast once a year where they served their maple syrup. However, the demand for their syrup became too high for just one day, with over 300 people in attendance and only 6 people working, so they expanded into coming to the Market. Hannah’s has since expanded well beyond the world of syrup into an entire range of maple products including barbeque sauces, mustards, candies, butter, and sugar. Hannah’s wants to be known for the quality of their products, offering a 100% satisfaction guarantee, as well as their selection of one-of-a-kind recipes developed by the pair from scratch. They love their community because of how friendly it is and especially this year, how supportive they have been of local businesses. Check out this week's Featured Vendor: North Shore Organics! Lesley and Spencer Hawkes have been operating as North Shore Organics since 2013, a short time after moving to their beautiful 75-acre home in Napanee. What began as a hay field has since slowly been built into a thriving farm in which all organic food is being grown. 2013 was not, however, their first experience with farming. Spencer began farming at the age of 13, and Lesley grew up with a huge garden at her famil...y home in which her mother grew all her own veggies. While both went into fields other than farming, they both always wanted to move to the country. They want to be known for their organic approach to farming, as a testament to the ways in which food that is better for us and the environment it can be grown. While pests and intense weather pose problems, they work to find alternate solutions, even if they require extra work. After Spencer retired and Lesley went to work part time, they knew they did not want to be done working and wanted to commit themselves to a healthy, active lifestyle. They love coming into their community, one that is friendly and incredibly supportive of one another, and that they love being a part of. Meet our Featured Vendor for this week: A Kid In A Candy Shop Jennifer Collins of A Kid in a Candy Shop has been in business since 2011 baking and making candies. Her first experience at the Market was under a different name with a completely different product soaps! In 2011, however, after a very busy Easter season of candy orders, she decided to return to the Market as A Kid in a Candy Shop. A woman of many talents, you can also find beautiful handmade baby blank...ets beneath her tent. More than anything, Jennifer loves to create and to share what she creates with her community; you can see this as there is always something new on her table in addition to her signature treats. She loves to try out new recipes and mix up ingredients, to make recipes her own, what her customers want, and based on what seasonal ingredients she can get her hands on. She comes to the Market as she loves to be a part of a group that works together to bring local goods to their community, and she has fun doing it. She loves how supportive our community is, especially during COVID-19 with everyone continuing their support of local businesses through difficult times. Meet our vendor J.D. Turning! John Dominik owns his own business, J.D. Turning, and at just 15 is our youngest entrepreneur at the Market this year. He started woodworking when he was just 7 years old, mostly working with pallets, building his own treehouse, as well as his first big project of building an Adirondack chair for a grade 6 project. He began using real wood in 2018, starting out making pens. Since then, he has moved into making cutting boards, as well as custom or...ders and special projects. Woodworking for John is truly a passion, and has created an outlet for his ADHD, grounding him through something hands-on and tedious, and making something beautiful in the process. The thing he loves most about coming into his community is being able to speak to its members both about his work. Joining John is his sister Emma. Emma recently graduated from Humber College’s Baking and Pastry Arts Program where she developed and refined her skills in making fresh breads and sweet treats which she sells every week at the Market! Baking for Emma is very soothing and therapeutic and after taking a year between high school and college, she discovered that it was something that she wanted to do for a living. Her participation at the Market marks the beginning of her business E.D. Baking and Breadmaking. So far, she has loved her community for its tight knit support of small and local businesses such as herself and has loved interacting with the public and fellow vendors. See more

We are happy to introduce you to our Seasonal meat vendor: Heriter Farms! They will be selling Certified Organic beef and pork every Market Saturday until the end of September. Heriter Farms is a young farm in Marlbank with a far from ordinary story. Owners Patrick and Valencia did not grow up farming. Patrick spent over thirty years as a corporate exec with dreams of a different life. Valencia was a Personal Support Worker who often reflected on her visits to her grandpare...nts’ farm in Alberta as her best memories. Now they are living out their shared dream of operating a small farm with a focus on sustainable, ethical practices. Patrick and Valencia have a herd of adorable Highland cattle, Tamworth variety pigs, chickens, ducks, goats, a small but fruitful garden, and more! They currently practice intense rotational grazing and no-till farming to support their efforts in soil restoration. They are a Certified Organic farm, offering 100% Grass Fed, GMO-Free, Pastured beef and pork at the market. Patrick and Valencia have a strong interest in education and sharing their passion with the community. They love coming to the Market because it is a chance to socialize, meet their customers, and share stories about the farm that they love so much! In the future they plan to offer more opportunities for people to visit the farm; they want a chance for people to socialize, but also an opportunity to introduce the community to their animals and learn about their sustainable practices. We are happy to introduce you to one of our fabulous seasonal produce vendors: Charlie's Acres. They will be selling fresh veggies and herbs every Market Saturday until the end of September. Charlie’s Acres is composed of three individuals: Hannah, Adrienne & Charlie. Hannah and Adrienne are long-time friends who grew up in a farming community and then parted ways. Hannah went off to school and then began working as a gardener, but a larger purpose was missing from her life.... Adrienne was living in Montreal, when a friend purchased a farm and she began working with them. This reignited an interest in agriculture, and specifically small-scale vegetable farming. Today, Hannah and Adrienne own their very own small farm in Stone Mills Township where they grow vegetables for markets and their CSA program. Oh, and Charlie is right there with them as their beloved pup and friendly face on the farm! Hannah and Adrienne are excited to be part of the Greater Napanee Hometown Market because it is an opportunity for them to get to know this lovely community and for them to showcase their products. They offer a large variety of vegetables, from the staples to the less common. You can expect veggies of all shapes, sizes and colours this season! All of their vegetable beds are hand scale with no tractor use. To ensure sustainable soil quality, their practices encourage disrupting the soil as little as possible. If you ever have a question about their products, they would love to chat about them. When searching for a plot to farm, Hannah and Adrienne were looking for several things: good soil, beautiful scenery and strong community. Being a new farm to the area, they are so grateful for all the kindness they have been given. They would like to thank their incredibly supportive local NFU. They would especially like to thank Roots Down Organic Farm, Highland Gem Farm and Fat Chance Farmstead for all their help this season! Outside of the Market, Charlie’s Acres offers a CSA program. Their memberships are full for the year, but they will start taking subscriptions for the 2021 season in February/March. Milk and Cookies Cafe specializes in beautifully decorated sugar cookies for every occasion, celebration and holiday. We all apple-solutely love this next vendor! Janssens Orchards will be with us every Saturday this season, bringing you apple products and more! Janssens Orchards is a small farm located near Bath, Ontatrio. The mission of their farm is the preservation of heirloom varieties of apples and pears. While their orchard is still not producing, they sell high quality locally produced fresh apples in season as well as products made from those apples. When you purchase from them you are helping them to preserve these old varieties.

We are proud to announce that Charlie's Acres will be joining us this Hometown Market season to bring you fresh produce each and every Saturday! Charlie's Acres is a women-run farm in Stone Mills. Adrienne and Hannah grow vegetables and herbs, adhering to organic (non-certified) and low-till practices that care for the land and unite people with delicious and nutritious foods. Charlie's Acres supports our local community by donating surplus and participating in Loving Spoonful's "Grow a Row" program.

Say 'hive' to a long-time favourite at the Hometown Market: Bumblerock Farm Bumblerock Farm is a small family farm in Roblin, where they harvest their own honey, organic vegetables and heirloom seeds. They recently just whipped up a fresh batch of their tasty Honey Butter. Karen of Bumblerock is a seasonal vendor at this year's Hometown Market. Swing by this Saturday if you're looking to satisfy your sweet tooth!

We are happy to introduce you to one of the produce vendors that can be found at the Hometown Market every Saturday: North Shore Organic Farm! North Shore Organic Farm began in 2008 when Spencer & Lesley Hawkes purchased the 75 acre property on Napanee's North Shore Road moving to the farm full time in 2012 in search of fresh air and a healthier lifestyle. Lesley's background includes many years experience growing a wide range of organic vegetables on the family acreage near ...Cricklade, Wiltshire in England. Spencer's working life began on a dairy farm in West Sussex, England which was followed by an Apprenticeship with the Ford New Holland Tractor Dealer for West Sussex. His family background stretches back to the 15th century and beyond when the family farmed in the Isle of Ely region of England. The farm's produce includes vegetables, garlic and Alfalfa Timothy hay all produced using sustainable practices. The focus is on best practices using traditional and modern farming methods in a diverse and resilient natural environment securing the future for their family.
