I recently hiked in a high alpine setting in one of the most beautiful places that I have ever seen in British Columbia at Cathedral Lakes.A setting where everything is and pristine and seemingly untouched, this is an adventure that I would highly recommend it.http://www.birdingpenticton.com//hiking-high-alpine-cathe/

Finally the full cost of the damage for the Testalinden mudslide which occurred near Osoyoos, British Columbia on June 13, 2010 has been publically announced, the total came in at $9,000,000. Subsequent to this disaster the province has inspected all such structures (as many as 2,000) and have developed a short list of "High Risk" dams to monitor.

We had a great birding tour on Thursday with 4 guests from Washington State. There were several target birds, the four at the top of their list were: Bobolink, Yellow Breasted Chat, Williamson's Sapsucker and Great Gray Owl. While we managed to find all four and had good looks at all but the Chat, which while very vocal only gave us fleeting views. Throughout the day we also saw all 6 species of Okanagan Swallows (Bank, Barn, Violet Green Tree, Cliff and Northern Rough winged), Swainson's hawk, Vesper Sparrow, 3 species of Hummingbirds (Black Chinned, Calliope and Rufous) Eared Grebes, House Wrens, Lewis Woodpecker, Cassin's Finch and Lazuli Bunting. By the end of a very productive day we had in excess of 70 species.

I have been spending a good deal of time in the field these past several weeks, learning more about the plants, fauna and wildlife that thrive here in the dry warm climate. While out taking inventory on the west bench in Osoyoos, we have been looking for Red-listed species. The issue with plants is that some are in bloom early in the spring and you have to be constantly revisiting the terrain to be at the right place at the right time. On my last visit a week ago we did manag...e to find a Gopher Snake, which is non venomous. Over the course of the past several months I have been visiting an active nest site for a pair of Great Gray Owls. When I went there today the nest had been vacated; however both parents and one juvenile were very near at hand. I'm not certain if perhaps one or possibly two other chicks survived and had also fledged, today I could find just one. When seeing both the adult and female parents it is quite obvious which one is the female as she is quite a bit larger. See more
