Crawlspaces are an area of the home commonly thought of as far, far away. That's not the case, though! A crawlspace is part of the building envelope, just like the attic, basement, or external walls. A properly insulated crawlspace will have a big improvement on energy efficiency and how well your home or cottage keeps a consistent, comfortable temperature year-round. Unsurprisingly, wasp nests don't provide much in the way of insulative value. While completing an exterior energy retrofit, where we re-insulate and re-clad a building completely from the exterior, we uncovered this large (and long since abandoned) wasp nest. The second photo shows the spray foam insulation that will do a much better job of keeping these homeowners comfortable.

Building envelope upgrades can help to preserve and protect heritage buildings, century homes, and other historic buildings of interest. Working together with a building designer, we installed spray foam insulation in this heritage building that will also act as an air and vapour barrier. This solution will help prevent mold and mildew from damaging the building's structure while keeping temperatures consistent throughout. There's a lot more to a properly insulated attic than just blown-in insulation. Attic baffles ensure your insulation doesn't fall into the soffits, while simultaneously allowing air to be channeled into the attic space through the exterior soffit vents. A combination of baffles, air sealing, and attic insulation will ensure a more comfortable, energy-efficient home with an attic space that won't be prone to mold or mildew.

Crawlspace insulation is an essential part of whole-home insulation and air sealing. Spray foam insulation combined with a thermal barrier is an ideal solution, not only insulating but filling any cracks and crevices to create a continuous air and moisture barrier. Crawlspaces may be easily overlooked as part of the home building envelope, but once properly insulated they play a big role in improving home comfort and energy efficiency.

Faith & the Common Good has a goal of reducing carbon emissions through building retrofits and green spacing. Faithful Footprints, led by the United Church of Canada, aims to reduce the carbon emissions of their places of worship by 80% across Canada by 2050. Together, the two organizations are providing grants to United Churches to achieve this noteworthy goal.
