Lost or abandoned fishing gear makes up nearly 50% of waste in the ocean, especially in coastal regions. This material does immense damage to reefs, wildlife and the ecosystem but is very recyclable. Copacetic not really!! When resorts use plastic and it ends up in the ocean, it can travel a long way. This cup all the way from Exuma- 171kms away. Be a responsible traveller and speak out. If this amount can be collected in 5mins, imagine what we could do in a year!!? Waterways carry this plastic for years until it hurts marine life, breaks down or worse .. ends up in your food. Every pound of fishing gear and plastic we recover is thousands of micro plastics out of the ocean and saving marine life. Picking up this waste as you see it, take little effort. As we move into the fall, @greatseaproject is ramping up collection and recovery efforts in our first location @caerulamar . We are excited to share what is next! Eliminate single use plastic. An estimated 8 million metrics tons of plastic trash ends up in our oceans every year. The ocean currents have formed five gigantic, slow moving whirlpools where the plastic collects, called gyres. Most of the plastic debris sinks or remains in the gyres, however a significant percentage of it washes onto our coastlines daily. After sunlight photodegrades the plastic into small pieces, aquatic life and seabirds mistake these fragments for food an...d ingest it.
