The AMAZING return and deposit containers being used by Roncy Pickup Dinners are circulating as we speak! They are: super cute (!) sturdy... reusable easy to clean & dishwasher safe clear - so you can see your treats inside (bonus!) available to test out via our friends at roncy pickup - fresh, delicious, take-out food cooked and ready to pick up at Wright/Roncesvalles Ave! We encourage your to check them out! Not to mention treat yourself with the marvelous creations from https://roncypickup.ca/ This is just one of many growing initiatives in Toronto which support the concept of a circular economy. Don't know what that is? Not to worry! A circular economy means that we challenge ourselves to design out waste and pollution by keeping products and materials in use and focus on regenerating natural systems. This ultimately means that products that cannot be reused as a whole or in its parts need to be phased out. (Instead of the linear model we generally operate under now, which involves only production consumption disposal/waste) https://www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org/ Reusable container systems are essential for this: they provide packaging for takeout and more that does not turn into single-use waste but circulates!

Canada’s New Climate Legislation: Climate Action Network Canada alongside members and allies have been working hard to land climate accountability legislation in Canada for years. Today with the introduction of Bill C12, we saw the government take some good steps toward enshrining Canadian climate accountability in law. But the bill as tabled needs some significant improvements, and it’s going to take all of us working together to make them happen. Here’s a quick 6 minute vi...deo from ED Catherine Abreu talking about Bill C12: https://fb.watch/1SF0N2KINe/ What is it, what is it not? What do we like about it, and what do we need to improve? The scariest thing about Halloween might be the number of pumpkins that go to landfill. According to Waste Dive, a leading publication for the waste industry, 1....3 billion pounds of uneaten pumpkins wind up in landfill after Halloween in the US every year. If you don’t carve your pumpkin, it will keep for several weeks. After Halloween, you can transform it into pumpkin purée for pies, muffins and quick breads or soup, dal, pasta sauce and much more. Freeze it if you like and thaw it out for your Thanksgiving pie. Whether you carve it for decoration or not, save the pumpkin seeds to roast. They make a delicious, healthy fall treat. Every fall, I buy sugar pie pumpkins like this one. I can cook a whole small pumpkin in my pressure cooker in minutes (life changing!). You can also roast them whole in the oven. If you do carve a pumpkin, save what you carve out and cook that. Your jack-o-lantern will start to decompose within a few days (depending on where you live). Some farms and zoos want your carved pumpkins to feed to their animals. You might have one near you. (Or you could leave yours outside for the squirrels if you have lots of them.) If you don’t compost at home but have wanted to, and you have carved pumpkins, consider starting your compost system now. You don’t need a fancy setupit’s difficult to stop food scraps from compostingand pumpkins break down quickly. You may even get some volunteer pumpkin plants in your bin. If you don’t have access to a compost bin or pile, some communities have set up post-Halloween pumpkin collections or drop offs. Search pumpkin disposal near me if you have carved pumpkins you need to dispose of. Pumpkins contain about 90 percent water. If those 1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins go back into the soil rather than landfill, so does the waterand nutrients in the pumpkin. Go here for how to cook a pumpkin: https://zerowastechef.com//how-to-cook-a-whole-pumpkin-in/

Let’s kick the single use plastic habit: Reduces Relaunch Many of us have all been astonished at the amount of single use plastic we have accumulated during the... pandemic: produce bags, takeout containers, PPE, etc. It’s terrible! As consumers many of us were under the impression we could not bring your own so we didn’t even ask! At the same time, some business owners have told us that customers are not asking to bring their own. So they don’t know that many of us would like to bring their own. It’s a vicious circle. We now know that Toronto Public Health (TPH) has no restrictions on bringing your own refillable containers to the grocery store or to restaurants for takeout. As consumers, we can do our part to raise awareness by simply asking business owners if they are OK with us bringing our own containers for shopping and takeout. We know that some business owners think they are not allowed to participate in bring your own initiatives. But they are mistaken. If we feel comfortable, we can gently inform businesses that we do want to bring our own and TPH has no restrictions on doing so. In fact, here is the email from TPH that says so (please see email response below): Toronto Public Health Response re: Re-usable Bags or Containers "From: TPHLiaison
