Where's my miracle? Exploring Jewish traditions for dealing with tragedy. By Morey Schwartz Why bad things happen to good people, or the flip side of it - where is my miracle - is a millennia-old question. Jewish tradition often has multiple answers to a question, as it does in this case. In this book, Rabbi Schartz presents a fresh approach to the eternal mystery of the miracle, based on the multiple texts found in Jewish tradition as well as lessons learned from experience.... The book was written following the Al Aksa Intifada, and its bloody consequences serve as a backdrop to many of the examples used in the book. These continual and random acts of violence in Israel forced survivors and rabbinic leaders to actively confront difficult philosophical questions. Rabbi Schwartz, noticing the answers survivors and spiritual leaders provided were not always satisfactory, and having wrestled with these questions in his own life (being orphaned at 20 years old), undertook the writing of this book. The book provides a look at the way the sages dealt with the suffering of the innocent throughout the centuries, providing the reader with easy-to-read rabbinic texts arranged in a text and counter-text format, for the purpose of presenting multiple Jewish approaches to some very difficult questions. In addition, the author provides a new, inspiring way of looking at the whole business of miracles. The age-old idea that miracles arise for those who deserve them is reconsidered, and a whole new perspective on the function and incidence of miracles is proposed. A well-written, thought-provoking book.
Today on Holocaust Remembrance day, we honor the six million victims and stand firm in our commitment to never forget. "For the dead and the living, we must bear witness. For not only are we responsible for the memories of the dead, we are also responsible for for what we are doing with those memories" -- Elie Wiesel
For somthing a little different, today we are reviewing a cookbook! You can find a sample receipe in the comments! The Best of Mexican Kosher Cooking By Shifrah Devorah Witt and Zipporah Malka Heller ... Mexican is not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Kosher food, yet Mexican food is very popular, so why not make it Kosher? That is exactly what this book does. The authors are a mother-daughter team, and they present authentic Mexican, Tex-Mex and Southwest dishes that burst with colour and flavour. The book includes over 90 recipes: there are Shabbos recipes, dishes for a Melave Malkah, for a Summer BBQ (with Argentinean influences), for side dishes, desserts and beverages, including Mexican Wedding Cookies and Mexican Brownies. The authors also include kid-friendly versions of many dishes. One feature I especially appreciated is the guide on how to make a dish just the right level of spiciness you prefer. I don't have a high tolerance for spicy, and having the option of making a dish as mild as I want it to be, without giving up on flavour, was a real plus. There are photos accompanying most of the recipes, and the entire book is done with beautiful bright Mexican colors. A real treat, whether you've been enjoying Mexican food for years, or just venturing into this cuisine.

Since we we spent the first half of November telling Veterans stories for Remembrance Day, it only seems right to spend the rest of this month telling survivor ...stories for Holocaust Education Month. Our community has a number of Holocaust survivors, many of whom have chosen to share their stories over the years so that we may never forget. Today we're sharing Elly Bollegraaf's story. Elly was born in September 1940, in Holland, just months after the German invasion. Elly survived by being hidden as a child in South Holland. On November 11th, 1918 at 11am, for the first time in four years, the guns fell silent. Today we stop to remember those who gave their lives for peace. We reme...mber those who fought, those who came home and those who did not. We wear a poppy as a symbol of thanks to those brave men and women and as a reminder of our history. Although the First World War ended more than 100 years ago, we must continue to remember and honour those who came before us. Lest We Forget. Note: The list provided was obtained via the Jewish Memorial Gardens website as well as through the community project book 'There I was..." Therefore, it is not a complete list of those who served. If you or your loved one's name is not on the list please reach out to the Jewish Genealogical Society of Ottawa at [email protected] or comment the name below, we are happy to honour those who served. Thank you.
