Northern Territory Government representatives have visited a remote Indigenous community amid fears residents, including children, have been exposed to asbestos, likely dumped there decades ago.

An architect who designed some of the most iconic buildings in Calgary and southern Alberta has died at 74 from asbestos exposure he incurred during the early years of his career.

Schmidheiny, 70, was sentenced to 16 years in prison and fined $15 billion in 2012 by an Italian court that found him negligent in protecting employees and nearby residents from deadly asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma.

One in four construction workers say they have been exposed to asbestos while two-thirds do not know that it can cause cancer.
