In 2002 the Canadian Federal Government signed a declaration that May would be nationally observed as South Asian Heritage Month. The term South Asian has broad applications which encompass many different cultures and ethnicities. Today, May 5, is observed each year as South Asian Arrival Daywhich recognizes the displacement of South Asians across the west-indies. The different facets of South Asian-ness, and the diversity which exists in our community, can be seen in t...he communities #GreenDupattaCo has worked in. There are both distinguishing, and uniting, traits. This month, as we honour the culture of South Asians from various localities within the diaspora, we encourage you to join in our conversation about the commonality of culture. What foods do we share? What words do we all say? This month, let’s celebrate the resilience of south asian communities across the globe! #greendupattaco #sustainableliving #torontocharity #torontocharities #guyana #westindian #guyanesecharity #india #indiacharity #varanasi #toronto #environmentalsustainability #sustainableliving #sustainabledevelopment #educationmatters #notforprofitorganization #notforprofit #myheritage #southasianheritagemonth #brownculture #colonialhistory #intersectionality

Did you know Silicone rubber does not react with food/beverages, or produce any hazardous fumes. Bonded silicon is a natural element, abundant in sand and rock. Why should we care?... Silicone products reduce the use of both single use and reusable plastics. Reusable plastic tools/containers need to be replaced much more frequently than silicone. If disposed of at a landfill for incineration, the silicone (unlike plastic) is converted back into inorganic, harmless ingredients such as amorphous silica, carbon dioxide, and water vapor.

Our final recipe for #Tistheseasoninggd comes from @Matthewsguyanesecooking! Matthew Allicock has always dreamt of sharing his culinary creations with the world as a means of bringing awareness to Guyanese and Caribbean culture. Matthew says his sponge cake is a mandatory dish for the holiday season! The sweetness of the cake comes from Demerara sugar. The sugar, which originates from Guyana, goes through minimal processing which means that it retains more nutrients than ...white sugar. It is often used in baking because of its crunchy texture, and caramel-toffee like flavour. Historically, sugar was one of Guyana’s largest exports. At the beginning of the 19th century, there were nearly 400 sugar plantations in Guyana. #greendupattaco #sustainableliving #torontocharity #torontocharities #guyana #westindian #guyanesecharity #india #indiacharity #varanasi #toronto #environmentalsustainability #sustainableliving #sustainabledevelopment #educationmatters #notforprofitorganization #notforprofit #christmascooking #holidayfoodies #holidayeats #holidayvibes #holidaysourway #familyrecipes #cookingforfamily #caribbeanfoodie #homefortheholidays #westindianfood See more

BONUS RECIPE ALERT! Today we have a second submission by the wonderful Reshmi Rampersad @tasteoftrinbago. Reshmi reflected on the warm holiday memories she shared with her father, cooking for the holidays. She told us, while making pastelles, we always had traditional parang music in the background as entertainment. Although I can’t return home for Christmas this year, I’ll definitely make pastelles the traditional way I did when I was growing up. To me, a true Trini Chr...istmas isn’t the same without it! If you’re trying Reshmi’s Pastelle recipe (see our previous post) then serve it with her delicious chow-chow! Comment below, do you call it Bora, Bodi or Bodo? #greendupattaco #sustainableliving #torontocharity #torontocharities #guyana #westindian #guyanesecharity #india #indiacharity #varanasi #toronto #environmentalsustainability #sustainableliving #sustainabledevelopment #educationmatters #notforprofitorganization #notforprofit #christmascooking #holidayfoodies #holidayeats #holidayvibes #holidaysourway #familyrecipes #cookingforfamily #caribbeanfoodie #homefortheholidays #westindianfood See more

Today, the wonderful @tasteoftrinbago shares with us the flavours of sweet, sweet T&T! Reshmi Rampersad is a Trinbagonian foodie and content creator who goes under the name Taste of Trini or Taste of Trinbago. She uses YouTube as a medium to share her recipes, culture and family life. Her main goal is to preserve the recipes and traditions that were passed on in her family. She is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree so YouTube and her other social media are hobbies that ...she finds relaxing and enjoying. Pastelles are synonymous with a true Trinbagonian Christmas. These are called pasteles in Latin America, and are similar to tamales. This savory Christmas snack is a reflection of the Latin American influences on Trinidad and Tobago. This traditional delicacy is wrapped in fig (banana) leaves and made with corn meal filled with a tasty meat filling, and steamed. Banana leaves are sustainable and multi-functional. Often used as serving plates - they can also be composted or fed to animals. Banana leaves are used to steam food, allowing the steam to penetrate the food inside or on top of it. The leaves can also be used to grill food as the grilling absorbs the flavour of the leaves into the food. #greendupattaco #sustainableliving #torontocharity #torontocharities #guyana #westindian #guyanesecharity #india #indiacharity #varanasi #toronto #environmentalsustainability #sustainableliving #sustainabledevelopment #educationmatters #notforprofitorganization #notforprofit #christmascooking #holidayfoodies #holidayeats #holidayvibes #holidaysourway #familyrecipes #cookingforfamily #caribbeanfoodie #homefortheholidays #westindianfood See more

Today’s recipe is brought to you by Priya Persaud @live.love.laughfood. When we asked her what recipe reminds her of Christmas, she immediately responded with Pepperpot! Priya said, Besides being born on Christmas Day, Christmas was always the most special holiday for me growing up in a Christian home. My Nanie was very poor, and every single Christmas meal was a treat as I remembered how hard it was to earn the money to make them. Pepperpot was probably the one dish that co...st the most, but it was made every single year since I was child. It just wasn’t Christmas without it. Luckily, I never had to experience it as I have kept the same tradition in my family now Wiri Wiri peppers, which are traditionally used in pepperpot, are indiginous to Guyana. They are known for their tangy flavour, heat and distinct aroma! They are a staple in Guyanese culture, used in all meals and even eaten fresh. #greendupattaco #sustainableliving #torontocharity #torontocharities #guyana #westindian #guyanesecharity #india #indiacharity #varanasi #toronto #environmentalsustainability #sustainableliving #sustainabledevelopment #educationmatters #notforprofitorganization #notforprofit #christmascooking #holidayfoodies #holidayeats #holidayvibes #holidaysourway #familyrecipes #cookingforfamily #caribbeanfoodie #homefortheholidays #westindianfood See more
