GreenBiz is offering a handful of awesome webinars in the upcoming weeks, including The Catalytic Coalition: Eliminating the Worst Greenhouse Gases Ever Made on May 4. According to Project Drawdown, adopting end of life strategies for old refrigerants (e.g., CFCs, HCFCs, and HFCs) will prevent the release of 57.7 gigatons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) into the atmosphere. According to a recent MIT study, emissions from the remaining stocks of CFCs alone is equivalent ...to 9 gigatons of CO2. These gases will leak into the atmosphere unless they are identified, collected and destroyed. In this hour-long webcast, you'll learn: Why refrigerant management is a necessary and vital strategy for preventing the climate crisis, The scope of the refrigerant problem that we are facing globally, How companies can provide leadership to address this problem by converting high GWP cooling systems to low GWP systems, How solving the problem will create energy and operational efficiencies, How commitments from major corporations can address this problem at scale & more! Reducing GHG emissions is a crucial action to help reduce climate change. Reducing GHG emissions not only helps against climate change threats, but reduces energy related costs and improves the triple bottom line. The Highest Emissions Reduction Target Award at our Green Leaders Awards went to City of London, Ontario - Municipal Government for setting a minimum 20% GHG emissions reduction target by 2030 for City-owned buildings and operations. Here's a shot of Jay Stanford an...d Mike Fabro accepting the Highest Emissions Reduction Target Award on behalf of the City of London. Did you know that since 2007, the City has reduced absolute emissions from 44,500 tonnes (0.125 tonnes/person) to 18,700 tonnes (0.047 tonnes/person) in 2018? That is a 58% reduction! To achieve this the City of London has been converting street lights to high efficiency LEDs, retrofitting the city’s wastewater facilities and water pumping stations, and new buildings are being built following sustainable design guidelines. Transportation is the second largest emitting activity for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in London, emitting 204,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. It’s essential that transportation emissions are reduced if we want to see a green recovery and help London reach #netzero by 2050. Two Green Economy London members have made changes in their operations to reduce transportation emissions: GoodLife Fitness and City of London, Ontario - Municipal Government. GoodLife Fitness i...s reducing their emissions and demonstrating environmental stewardship by implementing a sustainable transportation program for employees. This includes bike storage - a practical strategy for businesses to reduce transportation emissions and promote healthy, active living among employees. City of London, Ontario - Municipal Government, who is both a founding member and partner of Green Economy London switched from diesel fuel to compressed natural gas to fuel their waste collection trucks. Other options could be to implement a route optimization strategy to reduce idle time and kilometres traveled or electrify your fleet. Business Energy and Emissions Profile (BEEP) collects data on the four major activities in the business sector; waste, building energy (e.g. heating and cooling), transportation, and electricity. Of all the small and medium-sized business sectors in London, building energy use, primarily natural gas for space heating & water heating, is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. It contributes 268,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). Small and medium-sized bus...inesses in London have a huge opportunity to reduce their building energy emissions and help London reach net-zero by 2050. Green Economy London member Play Away Indoor Park set a greenhouse gas target of 20% in 2019 and to help achieve this they installed an ecobee programmable thermostat. In addition to saving energy it's estimated to reduce heating and cooling costs by 15%. Other practical reduction strategies your business can do to reduce building energy emissions are implementing a policy that all office based equipment and lighting be turned off when not in use, and making use of natural lighting as much as possible. Green Economy London is excited to announce the launch of the London’s Business Energy and Emissions Profile, otherwise known as a ‘BEEP’! BEEP is a carbon mapping tool for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that identifies greenhouse gas emissions by sector, activity, business size, and impact using collected data. It even identifies opportunities for reductions and the potential cost savings. BEEP was created by Climate Smart to help cities and on-the-ground partner...s create a projected baseline of their business community emissions. Green Economy London is one of three Green Economy Canada Hubs to receive BEEP in 2019 along with Sustainable Kingston and Sustainable Peterborough. Within the last five years five other hubs have received the tool as well. Did you know that 30% of greenhouse gas emissions come from small and medium sized businesses? In London SMEs emit 586,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. That’s equal to 2.3 billion kilometres driven! If we want to reach London’s goal of reaching net-zero by 2050 and have a green recovery post-COVID then addressing emissions from SMEs is key. This is a powerful tool for London businesses to visualize their impact so they can cost-effectively reduce emissions and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient city. Check out London’s interactive BEEP tool to see where your business sector, activities, and size stands and explore opportunities for emissions reductions. http://london.beep.eco City of London, Ontario - Municipal Government London Environmental Network London Chamber of Commerce London Small Business Centre London Economic Development Corporation Western University London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) LDREC Kaiser Aluminum London Ont Great Lakes Copper Ltd.
