KEEP YOUR OUTDOOR LIGHTS ON! At the recent Zorra Community Policing Committee meeting we discussed the recent influx of break ins and thefts. One of the proble...ms identified was how dark the village can be at night. OPP recommended keeping your outdoor lights on at night. If you have not already, switch to LED bulbs. With the energy savings, keeping them on over night is not a strain on your bill or the environment. When OPP do night patrols, they can only see what is visible. A well lit area is a hard one to sneak around on and check for unlocked vehicles or bikes. Next time you are out after dark, take note of how safe it feels in areas where homes do not have ourdoor lights on vs stretches with lights on. What a difference! This is ONE way that we can improve safety in our village. Lets make it harder for them to get what they are after! *Dont leave valuables in your vehicles. *Lock your vehicles. *Dont leave bikes and other items out and unlocked. See more

Budgets skyrocket and people get upset when they realize how much cost goes into changing an existing Kitchen layout. Electrical and plumbing is expensive to move & redo. Especially in an older home where there may not be wall or ceiling access to do the work without opening up drywall/plaster, removing cabinets, trim, patching, painting... etc. There are times when starting with a blank slate and complete gutting make sense but often a simple refresh or retrofit is all that is really needed to achieve that "eye sore to wow! look". For the sake of cost vs function. Make Aluminium Wiring safe in your Home. Aluminum wiring was commonly used in houses created in the 60s and 70s because of the high cost of copper. Special precautions and wiring methods must be followed when working with aluminum wiring within your homes branch circuits. Only AL-CU marked devices are permitted to be wired directly to aluminium conductors. Failure to follow this you run the risk of creating a fire hazard. Although aluminum wiring can be ma...de safe the danger is in mixing devices (such as receptacles and switches) that are rated for copper wiring with aluminum wiring. The dissimilar metals cause high resistance connections which lead to a connection getting hot and the inevitable failure of the termination. In some cases this can be linked to fires caused by improperly rated devices or connections that werent properly made tight. For these reasons working with aluminum wiring in your home should not be considered DIY friendly. It is best to consult an experienced electrician so you can get the full picture and cost to replacing your wiring or renovating your home. For those looking for a more in depth explanation on aluminum wiring please check out my blog on my website. https://www.greenelectric-automation.ca/how-to-fix-aluminu/

Here is an interesting article taken from ESAs website on RBO (Risk-based Oversight) and changes that will be coming in the future to how electrical inspections will be carried out and when you will or will not see an inspector. To summarize, this means that just because a permit for electrical work was taken out for a job does not mean a visit from an inspector will occur. Fees will still apply regardless of if the inspector does a work site inspection or not. What is... RBO - Risk-based Oversight? ESA is moving to a risk-based approach for electrical wiring by 2020. This means ESA will spend more effort on higher risk electrical wiring work, and less effort on lower risk work, without compromising safety. Risk-based Oversight means that ESA will use risk criteria to determine what wiring work requires a site visit. Permits will have a risk level assigned to it based on: who does the installation work what the installation is where the installation is All high risk work must be inspected, and medium and low risk work will be subject to selective inspection. That is, for every two, three, five, or ten installations, one will have a physical site visit by an inspector but this ratio is still to be determined. Why is ESA moving to a Risk Based Approach? We know you would like it to be easier to do business with us. We believe selective inspection and a risk based approach can help address your scheduling concerns as it creates opportunities for ESA to keep you better informed as to when an inspector will or wont be coming to visit a site. This also means ESA will be able to focus on the work that poses the greatest safety risk to Ontarians, including the investigation of work done by unlicensed contractors. When will I see this in the field? We anticipate that Risk-based Oversight will be in field by 2020. Were still determining how it could work and testing certain parts of the risk-based approach. Weve also gathered information from LECs across the province in Town Hall meetings to determine how this change could potentially affect their businesses to ensure the rollout is as smooth as possible. information was taken from https://www.esasafe.com/about-esa/stakeholder-engagement/rbo

Electrical Safety Authority Warns Consumers of Potential Electrical Inspection Scam in Southwestern Ontario MISSISSAUGA, February 1, 2018 - The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) has received reports that consumers in the Hamilton, St. Catharines and Cambridge areas have been contacted by representatives of a company notifying them that a mandatory electrical inspection is required at their household. A similar scam was reported in other areas of the province including the G...reater Toronto Area in previous months. These calls and visits are not from the Electrical Safety Authority. The Electrical Safety Authority does not call to set up inspections or ask for personal information if no recent electrical work has been done in your home. The Electrical Safety Authority is Ontarios electrical safety regulator and is the only organization authorized by the Ontario Government to enforce electrical safety regulations such as the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and conduct electrical inspections in homes for this purpose. If you receive a communication about electrical inspections and believe it to be a scam, do not provide any personal information and report it to Consumer Protection Ontario: https://www.ontario.ca/page/report-scam-or-fraud. The Electrical Safety Authority is reminding consumers to take precautions before allowing anyone claiming to be an electrical inspector into their homes. If you are approached at the door by someone claiming to be an electrical inspector, here are the steps you can take: Electrical Safety Authority Inspectors will arrive in a vehicle marked with ESAs logo. Look for it. Electrical Safety Authority Inspectors carry photo identification. Ask to see it. Consumers who are unsure, or have questions or concerns about electrical inspections, are encouraged to contact the Electrical Safety Authority at 1-877-ESA-SAFE (372-7233) between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Information about the Electrical Safety Authoritys permit and inspection process can be found at esasafe.com. See more
