There is a plethora of tooth whitening and bleaching treatments available, ranging from whitening strips, toothpastes, laser lights and custom trays. While the choices are overwhelming, what is the difference between professional bleaching systems and over-the-counter whitening kits besides the cost? The active ingredient in bleaching and whitening products is carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. These compounds enter the micro-fractures and pores in the enamel and brea...k down stain pigmentations such as those from coffee and wine. The main difference between treatments is the vessel in which the gel is applied to the teeth. Take home bleaching uses a custom tray with small reservoirs to hold the gel on the fronts of each tooth be whitened. The tray is fabricated from models of your teeth and is worn at night for 4-6 hrs for 1-2 weeks. The main strengths of this method are improved comfort and better contact between the bleaching material and teeth without contacting the gum tissue, leading to more effective and longer-lasting results. Moreover, there is decreased tooth sensitivity because the amount of product is controlled. Tooth whitening should be completed before any direct or indirect restorations. The main side effect is tooth sensitivity to cold. Using a sensitivity toothpaste prior to and after bleaching can help reduce sensitivity and accelerate the remineralization process. #greenevalleydental #gvd #growingwithyou #wefloss #oralhygiene #oralhealthtotalhealth #teethwhitening #dentaltips #dentalfact #ypeamile #ypehealth #peaceriverdentist #familydentist #mightypeace

Happy Earth Day! Here are some tips to make your oral health routine more Greene: 1. Don't leave the water running while you brush your teeth. The average person wastes 8 gallons of water every time they brush their teeth. That equals about 4 hot tubs worth a year! 2. Consider using a biodegradable toothbrush. Some toothbrushes are made out of corn starch or bamboo which can be used as compost in your garden.... 3. Cut down on toothpaste. A pea-sized amount is all that you need. 4. Recycle or reuse your toothbrush. Choose a toothbrush that is made out of recycled or renewable materials. Used toothbrushes make excellent cleaning tools and paintbrushes. 5. Recycle your dental packaging. This can include packaging from toothbrushes, toothbrush heads, manuals, dental floss cartridges and empty mouthwash bottles. #greenevalleydental #growingwithyou #gvd #familydentist #generaldentist #ypesmile #oralhealthtotalhealth #ypehealth #oralhygiene #earthday #happyearthday #mightypeace

April is Oral Health Month. This year the Alberta Dental Foundation and the Alberta Dental Association and College have partnered together for Brush-Up Alberta, a toothbrush drive for our neighbours in need. Toiletries and hygiene products are some of the most sought-after items at food banks in Alberta. The funds raised throughout the month of April will allow us to purchase and provide Colgate oral health kits for both adults and children. "As a profession, we understand th...e value of basic oral hygiene particularly to those with limited access to dental care. Partnering in this way with Food Banks Alberta during Oral Health Month is a great way to work together and help meet this need, particularly during these challenging times when many more Albertans are visiting food banks. Dr. Tobias Meiszinger, President, Alberta Dental Foundation. For every dollar donated in the month of April, the Alberta Dental Foundation will match it up to $20,000...so donate today! https://www.albertadentalfoundation.ca/brushupab/ Be sure to follow and share @DentalHealthAB and @ABDentalFdn #BrushUpAB campaign updates throughout the month of April.

In the spirit of April Fool's, here's some teeth jokes for you to enjoy : What has teeth but no mouth? A comb.... Why did the deer need braces? He had buck teeth. ne of our favourite clients is inspecting a filling that Dr. Harriet placed. We think that she passed his inspection! Why do baby (deciduous/primary) teeth need to be treated when there is a cavity? Even though they are going to be replaced by adult (succedaneous/permanent) teeth it is important to treat cavities to: A) prevent pain and infection; B) protect the developing teeth; and C) maintain space.

Stay back, Plaque! Ever had that fuzzy feeling on the surface of your teeth? That's plaque. It is a sticky layer of bacteria. Eating foods high in sugar like cakes, sweets and fruit can accelerate plaque growth. The acids produced by bacteria in plaque can weaken your tooth enamel, causing cavities. Plaque buildup from poor dental hygiene can cause bad breath.... When plaque is left alone for as little as 48 hours, it can start to mineralized on your teeth. After several days, this can become tartar (calculus). If left untreated, the accumulation of tartar can cause inflammation of gums or gingivitis. The only way to remove tartar from your teeth is at the dentist. #greenevalleydental #growingwithyou #gvd #dentalfact #oralhygiene #oralhealthtotalhealth #generaldentist #familydentist #ypehealth #ypesmile #peaceriverdentist #mightypeace

Use this expression the next time someone is quiet and isn't talking when you expect them to! The tongue is a muscle that moves several thousand times per day. The position of the tongue in the mouth is very important for speech, eating, drinking, swallowing and breathing. Proper tongue movement helps mold the hard palate into a broader space thus allowing proper dental development, a more open airway and preventing snoring. This means a decreased likelihood of upper respira...tory infections and tonsillitis than with a higher, narrower shape which typically develops if the tongue is tied (ankyloglossia) . This is often corrected with braces in the long run. If you suspect that your child has a tongue tie, talk to your dentist. #greenevalleydental #gvd #growingwithyou #oralhealthtotalhealth #wefloss #dentalfact #dentaleducation #tonguetie #ypehealth #ypesmile #peaceriverdentist #mightypeace See more

Why did the vampire go to the dentist? ...because he had a fang-ache! Happy Halloween from all of us at Greene Valley Dental! While you are enjoying your treats, here are a few tips to keep your fangs happy and cavity-free:... 1. Try to avoid sour candies: They are acidic and can weaken your tooth's enamel. 2. Limit the time sugar is in contact with your teeth: Bacteria in your mouth use sugar as fuel and the longer you feed the bacteria the more cavity-causing acid they will produce. Find an alternative to lollipops and mints. 3. Avoid sticky candies: Treats like gummies and caramels will get stuck to your teeth providing more fuel for cavity-causing bacteria. Scary things come to those who do not brush their teeth, therefore try to do this after your sugar-fest! This will ensure that you have a fangtastic Halloween . #greenevalleydental #gvd #GrowingWithYou #familydentist #GeneralDentist #wefloss #peaceriverdentist #prevention #dentaltips #oralhealthtotalhealth #ypesmile #ypehealth

Halloween is just around the corner, which means an inevitable spike in sugar intake to satisfy any sweet tooth. Regular oral hygiene (i.e. brushing and flossing) protects your teeth against cavities and gum disease by disrupting plaque and calculus formation. From all of us at Greene Valley Dental, we wish you and your family a safe and happy Thanksgiving! It is important to give Thanks to your teeth. They work hard on Thanksgiving and every other day of the year. In honour of your chompers; here are some interesting facts to chew on (the Thanksgiving edition): Turkey contains phosphorus which can encourage tooth development in children. Cranberry sauce with no preservatives or added sugar is extremely beneficial for your teeth, d...isrupting the harm caused by cavity causing bacteria, Streptococcus mutans. Turkey stuffing when mixed with celery and carrots contain a high amount of vitamin A which is very beneficial for your teeth. Bonus: Since Turkeys have no teeth, they rely on their saliva to help break their food down and begin the digestion process. #greenevalleydental #gvd #growingwithyou #dentalfacts #oralhealthtotalhealth #familydentistry #generaldentist #peaceriverdentist #ypehealth #ypesmile #mightypeace
