Now is a good time to prune out black knot if the infestation is minor. It's caused by a fungus (Apiosporina morbosa) and infects anything in the cherry (Prunu...s) family including plum, Shubert chokecherry, mayday as well as native cherries such as chokecherry, pin cherry and Nanking cherry. Black knot can be managed by pruning when infections are localized. Branches will die past the point of the infection once the black knot spreads enough to encircle the branch, called girdling. Left untreated the fungus will spread, eventually killing the tree. If your infection is really severe, remove the shrub or tree entirely and replace with a new tree that is not related. Prune out the affected branches. Prune off the branches at least 10 cm (4") below the black knots. To locate the correct the right place to make the cut, find the lower edge of the infection on the branch and then trace that infected branch back to where it is attached to another branch or the trunk. Cut out the branch without cutting into the branch collar. Do not leave stubs. Sterilize pruners in between each cut to avoid spreading the disease with a mild bleach solution or alcohol based cleaner, then wipe a soft cloth. Diseased branches should be bagged and put in the garbage or burned if appropriate. Fungicides are of little value as the fruiting bodies of this disease are everywhere and fungicides won’t completely eradicate the disease. #blackknotdisease #gardeningatusask #prunus #pruningblackknot
It’s that time of year! Seeds have arrived! Did you know in order to maximize your yield, some veggies should be started indoors a few months/weeks before spring. Some of the first to get started are onions, leaks and peppers (mid to late February), followed tomatoes a few weeks later. Or if you want to garden year round, try planting a counter top herb garden!
