Now is the time of year to get the last mowing in and do one last application of fertilizer! You can set the mower blades a little lower than usual. We recommend about 2. This way the grass is short enough it won’t get matted down by snow, but long enough to fight against any weed seeds that try to infiltrate. Once your sod is established, follow some basic maintenance requirements to keep it healthy! Fertilize a minimum of 3 times per year with a balanced fertilizer like our Greenhorizons Sod Farms 16-16-16, at a rate of 8lbs/1000 sq. ft. Mow your lawn a minimum of once per week, and twice per week during peak growing season. Ensure you lawn receives a minimum of one inch of water per week. When installing sod, stick to the watering schedule regardless of the forecast. Start watering as soon as you’ve installed a sprinkler-sized area! Fresh sod needs water ASAP. Sod is a perishable product. It needs to be installed efficiently following delivery or pick-up. Make sure you prepare the land before receiving your sod! There are 3 ways to prepare your land: 1. Rototill, rake debris, level surfaces 2. Rent a sod cutter to remove the old turf and 3. Scalp the grass by setting your mower to the lowest setting and mowing, rake debris and put down a thin layer of good quality topsoil. #yardwork #diyyard #sodinstall #stepbystep #Greenhorizons

Once sod is established, you can conserve water by watering only at the wilting point. The wilting point is the minimum amount of water in the soil that the plant requires not to wilt. Put down a inch of water at the wilting point, then repeat next time your lawn reaches that same point. This process encourages fast, deep rooting! #Greenhorizons #watering #yardwork #newlawn

Before installing sod, the underlying soil should be firm but not compacted. When you walk over prepared area with a hard sole shoe, you should only leave a 1/2 inch impression in the soil! The cooler fall weather is great for sod because it is a living product. In the middle of the summer when it’s hot and humid, not only do we get tired working outside but the sod tends to have a much shorter shelf life as well. In any case, the sod should be laid within 12 hours of receiving it. The sooner you can put it down the better. #fallsod #fallyardwork
