Today is Human Trafficking Awareness Day. At Greenstone Victim Services we are here to help victims and to educate about what Human Trafficking is and the risks to the people in our communities. Human Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, harbouring and/or exercising control, direction or influence over the movements of a person in order to exploit that person, typically through sexual exploitation or forced labour. We have had many community meetings and training... sessions for community service providers to know the signs of Human Trafficking and If you see something, say something. This is something that is continuing and it is up to us as community members to know the signs and report human trafficking. If there is immediate danger or if you suspect someone is being trafficked, call 911 or 1-888-310-1122. If you need support but are not in immediate danger, you can contact the human trafficking hotline: 1-833-900-1010. See more

We recently received a cheque from an amazing local young woman! Her class was scheduled to go on a trip to Europe but due to the ongoing global pandemic, the trip was cancelled. Chanelle chose to donate the money she raised for the trip to Greenstone Victim Services (GVS) because she believes it to be a good local cause that helps people at the community level! The money that she has donated will go towards helping provide crisis intervention services to victims of crime and tragic circumstance! Thank you so much Chanelle from all of us at GVS, we truly appreciate it! Chanelle Anctil Jojo Tanguay

Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) Residential School (1891-1981) Commemoration Project and Reunion events that took place in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in May 2013. This project was the vision of Esketemc (Alkali Lake) Chief Fred Robbins, who is a former student himself. It brought together former students and their families from the Secwepemc, Tsilhqot’in, Southern Dakelh and St’at’imc Nations along with the Cariboo Regional District, the Mayors ...and municipalities, School Districts and civic organizations in the Cariboo Region. The events were designed to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. Chief Justice Murray Sinclair challenged all of the participants to keep the reconciliation process alive, as a result of the realization that every former student had similar stories. Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of this project. As spokesperson for the Reunion group leading up to the events, former student Phyllis (Jack) Webstad told her story of her first day at residential school when her shiny new orange shirt, bought by her grandmother, was taken from her as a six-year old girl. The annual Orange Shirt Day on September 30th opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. A discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation. A day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected. Every Child Matters, even if they are an adult, from now on. (https://www.orangeshirtday.org/about-us.html)

Today, the federal gov't reintroduced proposed changes to the Judges Act aimed at ensuring that all newly appointed provincial superior court judges participate... in continuing education in sexual assault law and social context. The goal is to ensure judges hearing sexual assault matters will have the necessary training to fairly and properly decide matters, without the influence of myths and stereotypes. The Bill also proposes to enhance the transparency of decisions by requiring judges to provide written reasons, or to enter them into the record, when deciding sexual assault matters. https://bit.ly/332 #sexualassault #victims #survivors #judges #criminal #justicesystem See more

September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. If you or someone you know is in crisis and considering suicide, seek help immediately by visiting your nearest hospital, calling 911 or by accessing mental health resources via ontario.cmha.ca/docu/understanding-suicide-and-finding-help

Greenstone Victim Services 23.06.2020

Every year, 160 million people worldwide contemplate suicide and, tragically, 800,000 of them die by suicide. This means that more than 159 million people survive suicidal crises every year. Theme 2020: Working Together to Prevent Suicide This message marks the importance of communities everywhere coming together to recognize the impact of suicide and to strive to prevent it. At times, the work of suicide prevention can feel overwhelming, but even small acts can make a huge d...ifference. WSPD reminds us that our teamwork and solidarity make us stronger together. We should not assume that everyone who is in distress is suicidal (they’re not!). If you are worried about someone, it’s best to start by asking general questions about their wellbeing. Bringing up the conversation can be difficult, try starting with something like: I know you’ve been going through a lot lately. I want you to know I’m concerned about you. If the response is worrisome, you can ask: are you feeling safe?, and do you think about suicide?. It is a myth that asking or talking about suicide will put the idea in someone’s head. When someone is struggling... -check in with them regularly; see how they are doing - listen supportively to what they have to say -remember that you don’t have to have all the answers -know and introduce the resources of their area, if they need additional support -be prepared to assist them in finding information, but don’t take over as that reinforce their sense of helplessness. Resources are available to you and your community. Search the CASP Directory at www.suicideprevention.ca/need-help

The Ontario Government has announced new educational resources to raise awareness about #sexualexploitation and #humantrafficking among children and youth. Traf...fickers often target very young people and groom them for #sextrafficking. The new tools will educate youth on how to spot the danger signs, teach them the skills to avoid it, and where to get help if they need it. #KnowHumanTrafficking https://bit.ly/3joYg0i See more

No part of our planet is immune to #HumanTrafficking. In #Ontario human trafficking is a prevalent issue, accounting for roughly 65% of police-reported cases na...tionally. Each year ONVSP members respond to hundreds of human trafficking cases. As #firstresponders, ONVSP members are on scene with police to give immediate support to victims of this heinous crime and become the touchstone for many victims providing them with ongoing support required for their healing journey. If there is immediate danger or if you suspect someone is being trafficked, call 9-1-1 or your local police service. If you need support but are not in immediate danger, please contact your local victim service agency: https://www.victimservicesontario.ca/locations-1

THEME Committed to the Cause - Working on the Frontline to End Human Trafficking This year, we will focus on the first responders to human trafficking. These are the people who work in different sectors - identifying, supporting, counselling and seeking justice for victims of trafficking, and challenging the impunity of the traffickers. During the COVID-19 crisis, the essential role of first responders has become even more important. Particularly as the restrictions imposed... by the pandemic have made their work even more difficult. Still, their contribution is often overlooked and unrecognized. www.endht.org
