Here's an interesting piece of forgotten history: from 1908 to 1940, Sears not only dabbled in clothes and housing goods, but also full homes (also known as kit homes)! These houses would be featured in the Sears catalogue, and customers could select their architecture style of choice from dozens of different models. Pre-cut lumber and instructions would then arrive in a train car. Sears promised that a person could finish their kit home in less than 90 daysall without a carpenter and with only rudimentary skills. Today, most existing kit homes have been torn down or renovated beyond recognition, but some still exist (second photo).
