I saw an article recently that was titled something like "Losing a pet is almost as bad as losing a loved one." Whaaaaattt?!? For most of us, losing a pet IS losing a very loved one, a family member, a best friend, and the relationship that contained the most unconditional love we will ever experience. It's also a HUGE change - we're losing someone that we saw every day, took care of, interacted with, and their death leaves a gap in every day. Understanding emotions and how t...o support someone through painful feelings is very important with respect to pet loss - and having a pet die is often a child's first experience of death. If you've recently experienced the death of a pet, or are anticipating that loss, reach out to me if you'd like help. See more

So many parents worry about how to help their children through grief. This is great advice: Parents often feel pressure to say just the right thing when talking with their children, Yopp said. There is no need for this. It’s fine to not always know the right thing to say or how to say it. Children don’t need perfect parents just ones that are present, honest and available. I highly recommend the book "When Children Grieve" - it helps adults understand how to best support children through all types of emotions. https://www.washingtonpost.com//children-process-grief-d/

It is super hard to let our kids suffer... But that's actually not helping them. Learning how to manage your own emotions, and understanding what others actually need from us when they feel bad, can go a huge way toward actually helping kids. Yay Grief Recovery :-)
