I miss skating. I miss the smell of the arena as I step through the doors from the lobby. That smell, distinctive in its collaboration of frozen water, well loved change rooms, the mixing of people come and gone. I miss the hush, the silence of the empty space, moments before the others arrive. Minutes later, the air begins echoing with the sounds of steel on ice, chatter amongst the coaches and their students and the excited giggling of friends as they share stories durin...g their free time. I miss skating, that little shimmy as my blades first touch down on the ice, the swift uptake of speed as I push off and begin laps around the perimeter of the arena. I miss the chill on my cheeks as the air rushes past me, the pumping of my heart as I pick up speed and the bite of my skates on my legs as my laces tighten against the strain my movement provides. I miss skating, the joy I feel, the smile that comes so easily as I whip around in a spin, land a simple jump, and the excitement I can barely contain for the lesson that is to come. I miss the rush of adrenaline as I try something once lost and forgotten, my brain trying to catch up to my feet as they instinctively remember. I miss skating, the triumph I feel at an element I have clumsily but effectively executed. I miss the laughter skating brings me, pure, simple, uncomplicated joy. I’m sad. For once again, my dream has slipped from my grasp. I was so close. It was all planned out, I could hear the music; my movements and the routine were memorized, everything was in place. Just wanted to recognize a couple of our skaters who accomplished some impressive things over this past skating season. . Lillian - passed her Gold Interpretive test, making her a quadruple gold medallist. . Ayva and her Pre-Juvenile Nexxice synchro team qualified for provincials.... . Olivia and her Juvenile Nexxice synchro team qualified for provincials. . Morgan qualified for Provincials in the STAR 5 O13 category. . Daniella (homeclub NFSA, but trains in grimsby) qualified for provincials in the STAR 6 category. . Anna qualified for provincials in the Gold Women category. .
