Springtime outside hangouts. Rather have a fire pit or a cool water feature?
This time of year we get lots of requests for lawn aerating. With 40 years of golf course and lawn management and experience, here’s advise from GG OKANAGAN Principle Mike Riva. Turf should only be thatched or aerated when the grass is actively growing, generally after April 15. It is best to fertilize the turf a week prior to thatching or aerating to encourage development of healthy turf. Aeration is best avoided in the spring since the holes provide many voids for weeds. Do it between Aug. 15 and the end of September, a week after applying fall fertilizer high in potassium. Thatching or aerating before grass is growing vigorously will cause it to take longer to recover and provide an opportunity for weeds, so fertilize first, de-thatch second, fertilize third and aerate last, it’s a proven formula!
