"Safety tips from the neighbourhood watch committee: Previously, we talked about the theory of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), according to which natural surveillance, natural access controls, and clear markings of ownership help deter criminal activity. Of course, no learning initiative would be complete without some homework! ... Try the home security quiz linked at the bottom of the City of Edmonton's CPTED page: https://www.edmonton.ca//crime-prevention-through-environm Maybe you'll find a few ideas for mini home alterations, because the quiz also covers windows and doors. Edmonton Police Services has some helpful diagrams that show simple security upgrades to doors (https://www.edmontonpolice.ca//ProtectingYour/DoorSecurtiy) and windows (https://www.edmontonpolice.ca//ProtectingYo/WindowSecurity) to prevent home intrusion. Home alterations have been on the rise in the later part of the COVID-19 pandemic, so if you are following the trend, remember to add security to your plans."

Safety-related tips from the neighbourhood watch committee: With the snow in early November, we are all thinking about winter. How does does winter affect a neighbourhood watch initiative? For the most part, neighbourhood watch stays the same. We can still watch out for our neighbours from behind scarves, after all. Walking around the neighbourhood is perhaps more important in winter than in summer, because it helps you better adapt to the season. Edmonton reminds us that "W...inter in Edmonton is better than you might think" (https://www.edmonton.ca//wintercity/winter-mythbusting.aspx). Winter does have its own challenges for security. For instance, you should make arrangements for your walk to be shovelled if you are away, so that your home does not appear vacant. But it's best not to leave snow shovels outside as they are sometimes stolen. You should also be more careful to keep your vehicle in good condition, because an unexpected stop somewhere because of a breakdown can put you at risk. On that topic, remember to keep an emergency kit in your vehicle (https://www.edmonton.ca/programs/personal-preparedness.aspx). We wish everyone safe travels outside this winter, and hope to see you on the skating rink and out in the park! "

Dear Grovenor Community League Board Members: I want to provide you with an update on the construction that is happening at TELUS World of Science Edmonton and what these developments mean for your community. Since 2016, the science centre has been engaged in a capital revitalization known as the Aurora Project. ... Over the past four years we have completely renovated our restaurant, Zeidler Dome, S.P.A.C.E. exhibition, Nature Exchange, CuriousCITY, and Science Garage. In August 2020 we broke ground on the fourth and final phase of this project which will see the science centre expand by 20,000 sq. ft. The expansion is being added to the north-west portion of our existing building with a design that preserves and enhances the natural areas in Coronation Park. The final phase of the Aurora Project will bring new spaces to explore in your community including: The Health Zone exhibition in the Allard Family Gallery (opening Summer 2021) Expanded lobby and gift shop (opening Winter 2021) The Arctic exhibition in the Newell Family Gallery (opening Spring 2022) Outdoor Community Plaza with interpretive trails and more natural areas to explore (opening Spring 2022) I have attached all this information in a document that you can share with the rest of the Board and your community league members. Also attached is information about the construction tours we are holding on November 10 from 10:00 AM 6:00 PM. Tours will run every hour on the hour with a limit of 10 people per tour. Given the capacity constraints we are asking people to register with me in advance. These tours will give community members a behind-the-scenes look at the construction and some of the renderings for the new spaces. It is also an opportunity to ask us questions about the project. We will not be advertising these tours to the wider public (this is a special opportunity for individuals living in our neighbouring communities) and we would appreciate it if you could share this information with Grovenor residents. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Constance Constance Scarlett she/her Director, Government and Community Relations 780.452-9100 ext. 2523 11211 142 Street Edmonton, AB, Canada T5M 4A1 780.993.2704 www.twose.ca TELUS World of Science Edmonton is situated on Treaty 6 Territory.

Safety-related tips from the neighbourhood watch committee: You may have seen in the news recently that the opioid crisis has worsened because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent news highlighted concern over the availability of safe injection sites, which may make it seem that the opioid crisis is mostly the concern of provincial authorities. But everyone can be prepared to respond to an opioid overdose! As always, prevention is the best option, and knowing some basic safety in...formation about the problem, such as published by Alberta Health (https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/info/Page12491.aspx), is very important. Aside from being informed, anyone can obtain a naloxone kit. (Naloxone is a medication that directly counteracts an opioid overdose.) You do not need to be an emergency medical professional. You do not need to register or identify yourself to get a kit, and can get one from many local pharmacies, as listed by Alberta Health (https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/info/Page15586.aspx). Places that distribute naloxone kits provide training on using them. Naloxone training may also be available as part of first aid courses, which is where a community member learned of a few additional points to keep in mind: The first is that everyone who has prescription opioids should have a naloxone kit, in case, for example, a child is accidentally exposed to medication. The second is that kits should not be left visible in cars, because they may attract individuals looking to steal drugs.

Neighborhood Watch Update "Some updates from the most recent Grovenor Neighbourhood Watch committee meeting: As far as we can tell from conversations with neighbours, there is a fair amount of suspicious activity and incidents such as trespassing and thefts. We remind everyone to be vigilant: Don't leave cars or bikes unlocked, and consider installing motion-sensitive security lights and/or security cameras, which do make a big difference.... The good news is that groups of neighbours have come together to share their experiences and coordinate their reporting of ongoing problems to Edmonton Police Services, #311 (City of Edmonton), and other organizations as appropriate. We can all learn from and support each other, whether through social media, online, or in-person communication, and whether we are your neighbours in general, the neighbourhood watch committee ([email protected]) or the broader community."

Today's Neighbourhood Watch-related tip: Recently, a community member was out getting some fresh air (outside of Grovenor) when they were called over by some individuals who were struggling to restrain a person and asked to call 911. As it turned out, a resident of the nearest house was already calling 911, and helped everyone calm down (they are a trained nurse). ... The person being restrained is safe and was brought by emergency personnel to mental health supports. The experience is an opportunity to reflect on many subjects, including the balance between individual will and community authority, and the communal responsibility for mental health. We'll focus on what it means to be an active bystander, in this case with respect to calling 911. We all know that we should call 911 in case of emergency, but in a real situation, there are some thoughts that can get in the way: First, how do you know it is a real emergency? The answer is if you were asked to call 911, you are not responsible for deciding if it is an emergency. If you were not asked, but are in doubt, it is better to call 911 anyway. The 911 operator is trained to determine what response is necessary, and, as a bystander, you also do not know enough about what is happening to be able to judge. Secondly, will you get in trouble or be embarrassed for being involved? Remember that emergency staff are reasonable people, and they understand that you may not know how to act perfectly in unexpected situations. By being an active bystander, you can prevent great harm, while incurring only a minor inconvenience to yourself. For more information about what it means to be an active bystander in general, and links to related resources, refer to the City of Edmonton's website: https://www.edmonton.ca//initiatives_inn/get-involved.aspx

Summer is here, and with it comes warmer temperatures that facilitate suspicious behaviour and crime. We will post tips periodically, from sources such as the Edmonton Police Service, that can help you cool some of those heat-related impulses before they lead to harm. Also, we remind you that we welcome your ideas on improving neighbourhood safety and on being active neighbours supporting each other. ... We are looking for creative ways to keep neighbourhood watch active while respecting social distancing measures. You can reach us on Grovenor social media or email the Grovenor Neighbourhood Watch committee directly at [email protected] Today's tip: Bike registration (https://www.edmontonpolice.ca//ProtectYourProper/BikeIndex) Bike Index is a registry where you can declare ownership of your bike(s), transfer bike ownership to other people, and alert the community if your bike is stolen. There are two features you can use to get extra value from the system here in Edmonton: First, save your phone number on your Bike Index profile so that Edmonton Police Services can easily contact you if they find your bike. Second, many bike shops can give you tamper-resistant bike registration stickers with QR codes. Simply attach a sticker to your bike, scan the QR code and link it to the online profile of your bike, and find peace of mind knowing that your bike is now less likely to be stolen because it is visibly marked as registered. Don't forget to lock your bike properly, sticker or no sticker (https://bikeindex.org/protect_your_bike)!

A State of Emergency has been declared in Alberta due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the State of Emergency, ALL COMMUNITY LEAGUE FACILITIES MUST BE CLOSED. This includes halls, rinks, playgrounds, sports courts/fields, and any other facility run by a Community League. The official wording for this measure can be found on the Government of Alberta COVID-19 website under "Mass gathering restrictions" and is as follows:... "Albertans are prohibited from attending public recreation facilities and private entertainment facilities. This includes gyms, swimming pools, arenas, science centres, museums, art galleries, community centres, children’s play centres, casinos, racing entertainment centres and bingo halls." Please contact any renters/users of your facilities that have not yet cancelled their programs to inform them of this development. As a reminder, there are numerous online resources available to help you stay informed and navigate this situation. There are informational websites available from the Government of Alberta, the Government of Canada, and the World Health Organization with tools for the public. For information about the State of Emergency, please visit the Government of Alberta site here: https://www.alberta.ca/coronavirus-info-for-albertans.aspx We understand that this is a difficult time for everyone, especially volunteers. If you have any questions related to your Community League, or if you would like clarification on what this means for your League, please contact the EFCL at [email protected] or by phone at (780) 437-2913. Lastly, during this difficult time, we urge people to look out for one another. Here is an example of a communication sent to members by Ritchie Community League: https://mailchi.mp//how-the-league-is-responding-to-covid- Please feel free to use this as a jumping off point for creating your own message about how people can help each other. You are also welcome to contact Cecilia, the President of the Ritchie Community League, at [email protected], but please note that it may take a while to receive a response. Staying connected and making sure everyone is getting what they need is important, especially while practicing social distancing. We will be staying in touch with Leagues and will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
