Transition traditions, Autumn to Winter.... Started the season with harvest and gratitude for the abundance,... along with offering sweet blessings to the garden beds and food forest for a good winter's rest... and whispers of hope for next year's bounty. As the winds bite a little cooler and the daylight lessens, I enwrap my family in warm snuggles and simply... time together. Warm bevies, hearty soups. Lots of sleep. And as I step into the blessed outdoors, I pull the fresh..., crisp air deep into my lungs, held in my cells and Soul, and release the loads I carry. I breathe. I rest. I embrace. I nurture. I reinvigorate. And I will take this winter to look within, to allow healing, connection, and awareness. I . Back in my wildlife biologist days, I spent a summer working with bats in southern Alberta. In this poor quality photo, I am holding an adult Western Small-Footed Bat. Note its tiny size and blond fur, with black ears and wings. They are adorable! I wish I had a picture holding the gorgeous Hoary Bat that are substantially larger, but nothing like those you see in the movies or from other parts of our Earth. I can tell you a lot about bats. You can easily learn so cool... facts about bats on wikipedia, but better yet, search your local bat conservation organizations (sometimes called community programs). Here in Alberta, look at the website www.albertabats.ca to learn more about bats and learn how to build and install a bat house (aka bat box). It's really cool how years later my knowledge of bats was a huge asset as an environmental planner and landscape designer! Bat houses in every constructed wetland! Bat houses everywhere (except for near swallow houses... those birds are bullies!). Do you have a bat house in your yard? Do bats visit it? Grow dill to ward off garden pests. Grow dill if you like to pickle. Grow dill if you love the flavour. For me it is all of the above, but most definitely, for its scent and the memories. Scent. It unlocks memories, and awakens my soul. Dill reminds me of my Nonno, though he never grew it himself. It grew along the fence of the back alley. I smell it, and there he is! He's smiling at me or asking me to pass him a bucket as he works in the garden.... We shared many hours "nel giardino". In the middle of the city, the backyard was all garden, other than concrete for the deck and patio (and maybe some secret chickens and rabbits). I will be using dill more. Tomorrow I'm trying a dill seed and rye bread! It's good for the garden. It's great for pickling and cooking.
