Today is #PinkShirtDay and it is meant to lift each other up and support programs that encourage healthy self esteem and teach empathy, compassion and kindness. Pink Shirt Day was created as part of an initial movement to stop bullying at a Nova Scotia school. David Shepherd, Travis Price and their teenage friends organized a high-school protest to wear pink in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied [for wearing a pink shirt][They] took a stand against bullyin...g when they protested against the harassment of a new Grade 9 student by distributing pink T-shirts to all the boys in their school. Here are some of the truths about bullying that are hard to swallow: - 1 in 5 children are bullied on a regular basis (2+ times a week). - Over half of bullied children do not report being bullied to a teacher. - Bullying behaviour peaks for boys in grade nine (47%), while for girls it is tied for grades six, eight and nine (37%). -Children who are bullied are at higher risk of headaches, anxiety, depression, and risk of suicide. - Peers are present in 90% of bullying incidents.
