This usually happens because the home owners are relying on getting rid of a rat infestation or a mouse infestation instead of preventing one. Rodent infestations can be prevented by rodent proofing your home. Here is a step by ste...p guide to rodent proofing your home: Inspect foundation all the way around the home. Any crack, gap or hole that is or larger needs to be repaired. In holes that are 2 or smaller, Stuf-Fit Copper Mesh or Pur Black Foam can be used. In larger holes or gaps you may need to use sheet metal or hardware cloth with less than mesh to repair the area. Check all doors, door frames, windows and window frames. Replace any weather stripping that does not create a tight seal. Replace any broken window panes. Replace any damaged window or door screens. Repair any gap, hole or crack around frames that are or larger. If gnawing damage is present on doors, a metal kickplate should be installed to prevent any additional gnawing. Inspect all trees and hedges near home. Any tree branches or hedges that touch or hang over the house should be cut back to prevent rodent from using them as pathways onto and into the house. Keep grass short and trim bottom of hedges or bushes to expose soil beneath and eliminate rodent harborage areas. Inspect the roof. Check shingles, roof ventilators and vent screens to be sure they are secure and undamaged, replacing or repairing as needed. Make sure the chimney is capped to prevent animal entry. Core aeration reduces soil compaction, creating a channel through which oxygen, water, and nutrients can penetrate the soil. What's the Purpose of Core Aeration? Picture the soil under a healthy lawn. It's a soil studded with networks of air pockets. Oxygen travels through these pockets, and that's important: Just ...because grassroots are underground, that doesn't mean they don't have to breathe! But it's more than just oxygen that must percolate down through the ground, as your grassroots also need water and whatever nutrients homeowners are supplying when fertilizing lawns. There's a veritable beehive of activity going on down there under a healthy lawn. Now consider the soil under the grass that is performing poorly. Instead of being fluffy enough for oxygen, water and nutrients to flow through it (down to the grassroots), it is compacted. It may also be crowned with a thick layer of thatch, rendering it even more impervious.
