Super excited about the Guelph Dance Emerging Artist intensive new to the festival this year! Posted @withregram @gdintensive Repertoire!!! . This year Intensive participants will get to work with Laura Arend, a choreographer from France to learn her newest piece. . The repertoire session will be the third session of the day and will give dancers the opportunity to practice picking up choreography in an audition like setting.

Our first ever Virtual Spring Arts Explosion Camp begins tomorrow! We can't wait for the campers to experience all the amazing activities planned. Our second rehearsal for Imprint - a Community Dance Project is tomorrow but you still have time to join ! Especially because the new lockdown may have changed your plans slightly. Imprint is being presented as part of the Guelph Dance Festival 2021 Season and we are looking for an intergenerational cast of up to 40 movers, ages 8 years and older. ... An interesting opportunity!

We are so grateful to our community. Your support means we can invest in our local artists, continue to deliver rich programming, digitally and in person, and offer accessible arts experiences to our community. Our hearts are full and hopeful heading into to 2021 #gratitude

While we (like so many arts organizations) have had many disappointments in 2020 there have been some absolutely wonderful things that have come from it! One has been creating our more robust local Artistic Residency. Here are some thoughts from one of the Artists. "I am so blessed to be working with Guelph Dance through an Artistic Residency. My relationship with Guelph Dance for me has been incredibly fulfilling. I have a place where I can heal, where I can move, where I... can create, where I can be me - judgement free. I love that Guelph Dance promotes diversity and this mindset of intersectionality and bordening ou awareness of the dance industry. I am honoured and proud to be living in colour. Thank you Guelph Dance for trusting in my process." Tell us why you think Guelph Dance is important in our community? "Guelph Dance is about more than just Dance. It is about all that encompasses being a human. Kindness, generosity, opportunity, education, motivation - truly I hear feedback from so many parents and kids who tell me what an amazing experience Guelph Dance is. Putting aside competition and using conversation to empower their students and those who work with them. I love that it is just about being. There doesn't need to be anything extra - but if there is, there is purpose, a choice, an idea behind that motivation. Allowing stories to be pushed and explored in a different way. It has allowed a space for me - as a Black woman - to feel safe and secure, in an industry that has not always made me feel that way. We need this space, this concept and this energy to continue growing into the dance industry. " ~ Kween Kay So with those powerful words, here is to 2020 and the extraordinary challenges and lessons that have come from it. "For the last three years, since retiring, I have sat on the board of Guelph Dance. Previously over the last 20 years I have attended performances and I’ve volunteered, when I was able to schedule my work close to home in May or June. I feel committed to GD because the alternative arts festivals are a reflection of how Guelph is a different sort of community. With one of the first recycling programs, a Green MPP and a way out there jazz festival, it is only fitting that Guel...ph has a serious contemporary dance festival that has brought courageous national and international dance performances to Guelph. " ~ Nichola It is the extraodinary commitment of people like Nichola, our board of directors, committee members, our camp volunteers and festival volunteers that help bring our programming to the community every year. 2020 may have looked a little different for our volunteers but their continued commitment (many many many video meetings ) through the pandemic was instrumental in pivoting our programming. They believe like we do, that the Arts are essential for our well-being as individuals and as a community. Rather than highlighting the past year In our mini countdown to the end of 2020, we are looking forward. If COVID has taught us anything, it is that the Arts are essential for our well-being as individuals and as a community. We may not know what will come but we promise to be innovative, to support our local artists and provide accessible opportunities to our whole community! ... Here are a few thoughts from one local artist. "Guelph Dance has supported me in many ways- performance opportunities, providing studio space to work and create, and much morale support in growing and expanding my creative voice. This community benefits from the artistic offerings of some of the amazing dancers and choreographers that Guelph Dance promotes and presents each year. As we head towards the end of the year we normally take a moment to look back at the past year and share some of our highlights. 2020 is a tough one because much of our originally planned programming was cancelled... however we took that time and pivoted like so many arts organizations. So instead of looking back, we are looking forward. We may not know what 2021 will look like but we can promise is that we will find creative ways to connect, grow and support artists no ma...tter what challenges our circumstance might bring. If COVID has taught us anything, it is that the Arts are essential for our well-being as individuals and as a community. Guelph's Rotary clubs (Rotary Club of Guelph Trillium and Rotary Club of Guelph) do so much for and support so many people and organizations in our community. Specifically at Guelph Dance we a deeply gratuful for the Rotary Club of Guelph Trillium who have supported our Arts Explosion Camps by contributing to our subsidy program. The Sharing Stories edition of The Welcome Project takes place in a virtual setting to inspire individuals from already isolated populations to meet, connect, and experience inclusivity, creativity and self-expression during a time when other arts-based activities have been suspended and physical distancing must be upheld. The Welcome Project: Sharing Stories video collection introduces each individual with a glimpse into their personal experience within the shared movement and memory process that connected everyone to the theme of home. Each mini-showing will feature five pieces from our repertoire, including at least two of the new works.
