So this is upside down but it is the transition piece connecting the main body to the cap. As always, I do my best to keep the grain flowing. ... This is a pair of cove mouldings that will create a nice transition from the main body of the post and into the cap. I first designed the curve in sketchup, and you might notice that it is asymmetrical/elliptical. Doing this results in a more interesting shape than a perfect radius. The following photos show how I achieve these on the tablesaw. Woodworking OG's will know right away but some might have questions. Don't be afraid to ask/discuss below ... I don't really have a "standard" design. I'm at my best when I can explore new ideas. The more ideas I get to explore, the more they begin to perpetuate themselves. I'm practically vibrating with ideas from this job. I'm going to start a sketchbook to quickly "download" these ideas. A transitional moulding for a transitional newel post! First I design it in sketchup, then I select the material, then I run it through all the necessary processes to get it to look like this! The bases on my newels are simple hexagons with just a little extra embellishment to break the two sections up.
