FYI Beekeepers!

Purple Thistle Beekeepers are looking for new core-organizers and volunteers to take care of the hives this year! It's an amazing learning experience, plus you will most likely get to snack on lots of honey! The Call-out: "Some of you already know that last winter we lost all three of our hives to disease. We had a lead on some new hives that we could purchase for a good price and we opted to wait on those hives rather than order some. Unfortunately those hives fell through.... At that point Hannah and I (the group organizers) decided it was too late in the season to start up again. Also both of our schedules had become very busy and our group was significantly smaller in size. The other thing that happened last year was that our supporting organization, The Purple Thistle Centre, closed due to lack of people using the facility. When their website went offline we lost our mailing list and all of our group contacts. We have done our best to come up with a list of known contacts but don’t know how many were lost. As things now stand: ~We still have our location available to us near Commercial Drive and 1st Avenue. ~Our equipment was sterilized last spring, but we have been told some bugs have moved in while it was in storage. Also some of the frames need repairing/replacing from before, which should be an easy fix. ~We have money left over from our previous funding that we can use to start up again. ~We need a new group organizer and more volunteers." This Sunday: Native Bumble Bee Conservation & Nest Making with the Thistle's Beez mentor Brian Campbell. Been learning some bumble bee populations are down 90% in this region. This is a really good opportunity to learn ways we can act more responsibly so native pollinators can once again *bee* thriving!
