Only honouring women for one day doesn't seem right to an office owned and run by women, therefore, we would like to continue the celebration of women by putting a spotlight on Clara Brett Martin, the first female lawyer in Canada. "Clara Brett Martin, lawyer (b at Toronto c1874; d there 30 Oct 1923). The daughter of an Irish Anglican superintendent of schools, Martin entered Trinity College, Toronto, in 1888, just 3 years after women were first admitted, and graduated wit...h an honours BA in mathematics in 1890. The next year, she applied to the Law Society of Upper Canada for admission as a student but was refused. Only with the support of such influential figures as Dr. Emily STOWE and Premier Sir Oliver MOWAT and the passage of a provincial act admitting women as solicitors was Martin able to became a law student in 1893 and article with Samuel Hume BLAKE. Despite tremendous hostility from male lecturers and students, she placed first in the Law Society's examinations. Martin then enlisted the help of Lady ABERDEEN and Mowat to have legislation passed admitting women as barristers. The Law Society again tried to block her entry into the profession but relented when pressure was brought to bear by wealthy clients of the Society's benchers. Martin finally achieved her goal on 2 February 1897, becoming the first woman lawyer in the British Empire. She went on to earn Bachelor of Civil Law (1897) and LLB (1899) degrees and to establish a successful Toronto practice. However, she was seldom able to appear in court because of the stir it caused, and never married. She participated in various women's organizations, served for a decade as the only female trustee on the Toronto Board of Education and was almost elected as an alderman. Despite Martin's heroic trailblazing, not until the middle of the 20th century did significant numbers of women enter the legal profession in Canada."

As we move closer to 2021 we want to thank our clients, professional colleagues, friends and family for their continued support. Although Niagara is moving into Stage 3 as of July 24th, 2020 our office will remain conducting all non-essential Meetings via Telephone Conference until further notice. This will allow Ms Guilbeault to keep both herself and those she loves who are immunocompromised safe. We thank everyone for their continued kindness and understanding during this time. As Courts reopen for Family Law cases this week our office will be busy attending Court in person and virtually to reschedule our Court Action files. Ms. Guilbeault will be OFF Wednesday June 24th, 2020 due to Medical Appointments, therefore, the office will be CLOSED. Ms. Guilbeault will be back to work Thursday June 25th at 9:00AM.

As restrictions ease and businesses re-open we'd like to remind everyone to stay vigilant in keeping themselves and community members safe and healthy! Due to daily operational changes as notified in an earlier post this month, moving forward our office will be open by APPOINTMENT only. We will also continue to encourage Telephone Conferences instead of in-person meetings but can discuss in-person meetings on a case by case basis. Thank you to everyone who has been conscious of their health and the health of others. Together we will get through this unprecedented time!

Looks like 2020 is bringing lots of change to our office. As of July 1st, 2020 our Accounts Manager, Caitlyn Tiffney will be moving out of the Niagara Region. Caitlyn is an integral part of our office, therefore, we have decided that we will have her stay on as Accounts Manager by working remotely. This means there will be some daily operational changes to accommodate this newly structured position. 1. Our office phone effective immediately will no longer accept messages. W...e ask that you email our office instead. If you wish to speak to Caitlyn or FayAnn by telephone or schedule a meeting please send your request by email and Caitlyn will schedule a date and time for this to take place. 2. We ask that correspondence which are normally faxed now be emailed to our office instead. During COVID this has been made a regular practice but we hope to make this change permanently. It not only allows Caitlyn to process correspondence faster but allows us to be more eco-friendly by saving on paper use. 3. Our office will be open by Appointment ONLY effective immediately. FayAnn is a litigator and a working Deputy Judge and DRO, therefore, once Caitlyn moves there will be no one in the office on a regular basis. We ask that you email our office to arrange document drop offs, meetings and service of documents. Keep in mind: Outside our office door there is a black locked mailbox which will allow for secure document drop off Monday-Sunday 9AM - 5PM without prior arrangement with our office. It's our hope that with the use of EMAIL as our main communication we can keep Caitlyn working effectively for our clients and professional colleagues.
