TRAVEL TRIVIA - Zen by the Bay Bern is a good friend of the Bridles, the family I stay with when I am in Red Bay, Labrador. He is from Cartwright, 200 miles to ...the north, a town remote even for Labradorians. Bern works for the highway department, and is very learned on just about any subject. He reads voraciously, and told me he has been writing in his journals every evening for decades. He doesn’t let anyone read them, but says they are full of stories and predictions. Someday I may visit him in Cartwright and put a sleeping potion in his coffee. He once told me about a lesson he had learned while fishing for salmon with an older man. In the spring the ice would sometimes interfere with the nets, and there would be no salmon in the haul-up. The older man would always laugh. Doesn’t do any good to cry. Bern and I met in the Bridle family’s restaurant, as it is also a social center. One morning after breakfast, Bern left the restaurant while I stayed. After a few minutes he came back and asked me to come outside. As we stood in the restaurant’s parking lot near the harbor, he took a deep breath and asked, Smell the difference? Difference in what? You can smell the fish, he said. It’s been five years since I’ve smelled the fish coming off the water. Now that he had awakened me to it, I could smell it too. The odor was not strong or fishy, but delicate, almost sweet. It was a remarkable moment, full of portent. The fish are coming back, he said. photo Bern at the Bridles.
