GLSP/CPP Where Are They Now? lifeguard profile: Steph Sells 1. Years at GLSP/CPP: I grew up swimming and taking my lessons at Gull Lake Pool, I was one of those kids hanging off the instructor and keeping them on their toes (sorry To all my instructors ) . Then I took my lifeguard and instructor course and got fully pd back I worked at the swimming pool from 2015-2019 and in my final year was the head guard....Continue reading

GLSP/CPP Where Are They Now? profile: The Pee Puddle 1. Years at GLSP/CPP: 44 2. If you guarded, taught or both: neither. I was mostly just dead weight. ... 3. Favourite part(s) of the job: listening to the staff’s frustrations as they incessantly tried to push me. You’d think they would have caught on that it was futile and that I wasn’t going anywhere mwhahaha. I also really got a kick out of when guys didn’t want to stand in me, so they stood on my far side, shot for the urinals and hoped for the best. 4. The best memories you have of working at the pool: like I said, I didn’t work. I just kinda laid around. 5. Where are you now: still here. I just filled out a little bit. Quarantine, amirite? 6. Anything else you’d like to include: Thanks to the CGTW Rec Board and the New Horizons for Seniors Program for making this glow up possible!

GLSP/CPP Where Are They Now? lifeguard profile: Steven Deobald 1. Years at GLSP/CPP: 1996-2000, I think? 2. If you guarded, taught or both: Both... 3. Favourite part(s) of the job: Being the only male lifeguard meant that I was the brunt of some highly inappropriate workplace humour that no other coworkers in any of my "real" jobs have even come close to competing with. No one I've met on the planet is as funny as a team of Gull Lake lifeguards. This mostly made up for the fact that I was usually stuck cleaning poop off the floor of the boys' bathroom, since I was The Only Boy. I learned later in life that this isn't solely an affliction of little boys. No group of men - of any age, of any race, from any country, from any educational background - can consistently hit a toilet. It's what unifies the men of our species. 4. The best memories you have of working at the pool: -Stacey hiding in a locker for HOURS to scare the living shit out of Rachelle. -The bees. -Shamelessly listening to a lot of bad music. -That time a lady jumped into the pool with her dress on because she thought her kid was drowning. -Chance Peterson's flip-dives, actually. He was really good. -That little 4-year-old redheaded kid who kept asking about the logistics of the pool: "where does this drain go? how do the filters work? how much does it cost to heat the pool?" If I think hard enough I'll remember his name. -Hearing Daft Punk for the first time in Krista Bradley's basement at a staff party. 5. Where are you now: I've spent the better part of the past 10 years in Bangalore, India. I started a company there: https://nilenso.com - an employee-owned software co-operative... nothing says "hi, I'm from Saskatchewan" like going overseas to start a Co-op! I've since left and it continues to remain profitable. I've spent the last two years travelling between India and Canada, volunteering, and looking to start a research project in Vipassana meditation. I swear it's not as weird as it probably sounds. 6. Anything else you'd like to include: I've spent a lot of time in the past few years researching and thinking about public infrastructure. Gull Lake is a very fortunate place. Everyone goes to a public school, we have a library, a movie theatre, rinks, a park, plenty of outdoor space, and -of course- a pool. A public swimming pool is a lot like a library. It's a space where everyone is welcome and in the same open and loving way a public library says "come here if you want to read!" a swimming pool says "come here if you want to swim!" Living in the USA and India, I have learned what an incredibly luxury this is in other parts of the world. Bangalore and Chicago have pools... but they don't have the everyone-is-welcome-here kind of public pool that Gull Lake has. That's something really special. And it's something to be grateful for every single summer. When there isn't a crippling global pandemic threatening the very existence of our species, of course.

GLSP/CPP Where Are They Now? lifeguard profile: Wendy Sells Years at GLSP/CPP: 1973, 1974, 1987 Did you guard, teach or both: I lifeguarded and taught lessons in ’73 and ’74 with Darcie (Anderson) Oakey, Shirley Grimes and Donna McLeod.
