Mothership.sg reported, lawmakers in Saitama, Japan, passed an ordinance on March 26 forbidding passengers from walking or running on escalators. It may be tempting to jump in a descending elevator. Childlike curiosity may have you believe that you will experience zero gravity while the elevator descends. However, this is untrue. Your movement is relative to the elevator car while inside and thus you will not experience anything out of the ordinary. ... You may have visited us at our office in what is now trendy Yaletown. We were surprised to learn that back in the early 1900s, an elevator industry giant operated in a neighboring building. The Otis-Fensom Elevator Company operated from 1152 Mainland Street until the 1940s. The four-storey brick-front office building is now on the Vancouver Heritage Building Register. It was designed by architect Thomas Hooper and built in 1912 by McDonald & Wilson. The Fensom Elevator Wor...ks merged with Otis Canada in 1905 and worked together on many projects throughout Canada in the twentieth century. The company name was changed to Otis Elevator Co in 1949 after the retirement of Charles J. Fensom.
