I am asking that government, industry and local communities work together to understand what factors need to be met to begin to welcome our American neighbours back to Canada. #vicharbour
Looking to support the local restaurant industry while following COVID-safe health directives? Check out a great new website promoting outdoor dining patios and those offering takeout in Victoria and across Vancouver Island: https://loom.ly/MEdRyJk.
The Breakwater Cafe & Bistro offers outdoor, oceanfront dining on a heated patio with wind protection. Grab a bite before or after putting in the time for a walk (or run) along the Ogden Point Breakwater. : Breakwater Bistro #vicharbour #supportlocal #victoriabc #yyjfood

Happy Orca Recovery Day, an intentional day of action to restore habitat, reduce stormwater pollution, and educate the public about things they can do every day to help one of the most iconic species of the Pacific Northwest. There are only 74 Southern Resident Killer Whales and their decline is linked to threats such as high levels of contamination, habitat loss, noise and disturbance from boats, and reduced availability of their preferred prey, chinook salmon. On water we ...can help by keeping our distance (400m away from any ecotype of Orca from Ucluelet to Campbell River), turning off engines, sonar, and fish finders when not in use, and respecting sanctuaries and restricted fishing zones. We can also make sure to use environmentally friendly products and practices while maintaining or repairing our vessels or float homes ensuring nothing is spilled into the coastal-marine environment. On land we can build a community raingarden, keep our vehicles and machinery well maintained, create a stormwater management plan, use environmentally friendly products, and always be conscious of what we flush down our household and storm drains as all things return to the sea where they can persist for long periods and bioaccumulate up food chains. For more resources on some of the many great environmental non-profits working to protect our coast and Orca ecosystems see: Watershed Watch, Raincoast, Georgia Strait Alliance, MERS, Peninsula Streams, Saturna Island Marine Research, and the World Fisheries Trust. The weekend is at the end of this rainbow! Thanks to John for sharing. Stay safe and stay warm over this fall weekend. #vicharbour
Last Friday our staff participated in the Signs of Lekwungen Walking Tour with Explore Songhees. Did you know that there are seven signs that honour the art, history, and culture of the Lekwungen People throughout Victoria? The site markers are spindle whorls designed by local Songhees artist Butch Dick. You can see one of the whorls along the Inner Harbour Lower Causeway. This area, known as, place of mud, is called xwsз yq'm (whu-SEI-kum). This spindle whorl features the eagle -- messengers who guide Lekwungen People. Our warm thanks to our host Cecilia Dick for leading us on an educational and beautiful tour, helping us to learn more about these traditional places that remain of significant importance to the Lekwungen People today. #vicharbour

Orange Shirt Day is an annual awareness campaign held in Canada. The main task is to raise awareness of the Indian Residential School system on Indigenous communities in Canada, and to promote the value of Every Child Matters. The legacy of residential schools is that thousands of children were removed from their families, deprived of their language and culture, and exposed to abuse and forcibly enfranchised. Since it began in 2013, the phrase Every Child Matters’ has been... used as part of the movement to recognize the value of every child and for communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for future generations. Learn more at www.orangeshirtday.org. Today, members of our team gathered at the Canada sign at Ship Point, in our maintenance yard, and at our head office (puppy included) for physically distanced photos. The Canada sign at Ship Point will be lit orange for the evening.
