Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis 02.05.2021

Females have a dress code at the school: they're not allowed to wear spaghetti straps, they're not allowed to wear skirts above their knees. We all know they're told they can't dress like that because it will provoke the boys, but we can't start teaching boys that just because a girl dresses like that doesn't mean she wants to get raped? he said. That's the underlying issues I think a lot of students are taking with them today. Sending solidarity to the amazing students at Kings County High School in Nova Scotia today for taking a strong stance against rape culture and saying enough is enough.

March 31st is Transgender Day of Visibility. Today is a day to celebrate the contributions trans and gender non-conforming folks have and continue to make to social movements and to society as a whole. It is also a day to raise awareness about the discrimination and injustice faced by the trans community. Trans and gender non-conforming individuals face some of the highest rates of violence worldwide. ... We need to work together to create a world in where transgender people can be proud and visible without the threat of violence. This action may start today, but we must continue it everyday. #TDOV2021 #TransDayofVisibility

Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed on November 20th to remember and honour transgender and gender-diverse individuals whose lives have been lost to anti-transgender violence. Between 2008-2020, 97% of transgender people killed as the result of transphobic violence were transgender women and femmes, 89% in the USA were racialized, and 60% were sex workers. Today and everyday we remember the importance of being intersectional in our work, and how the fight to end gender...-based violence must include advocacy around ending transphobia, racism and sex-worker stigma. Check out these websites for some great resources on how you can learn more about Transgender Day of Remembrance and what actions you can take to work towards ending transphobia: https://www.glaad.org/tdor https://tgeu.org/tmm/ #TDOR2020

Truth be told, when we are talking about violence against women we are most often talking about men. Last year in Ontario, 89% of women and children on OAITH's femicide list were killed by men known to them, including partners, former partners, fathers, brothers, sons, grandsons, friends, and uncles. Our shelters play a vital role for survivors of violence, and give women who need it a place where they can turn. Despite this, most shelters in Ontario can’t cover their basic operating costs without fundraising. Text COURAGE to 41010 to donate $5-$25 and help ensure women will have a place to turn when they face violence.
