I have had many questions about updating insurance waivers amidst Covid-19. A Waiver is a first line of defense, but a waiver that includes waiving rights if a client contracts Covid-19 at a particular venue has not yet been tested in a court of Law. There must be certain elements to make a waiver enforceable, One is making sure the client understands what they are signing. If you are updating your waiver to include contracting transmissible diseases, please make sure you get advice from your legal counsel to ensure that it works for your situation.
I just did an interview on CBC Radio about gyms, fitness, resolutions and Covid. In case you don't listen to Radio Canada, here's what you need to know. 1. You ...don't have to give up on your resolutions just because the gyms are closed. More than ever, you need someone outside yourself to help you get healthy--both physically and mentally. It's never been more important. Call a local gym. Ask how they can help you with your goals even if they're closed. The best gyms will have an answer. Don't wait. 2. Gyms who are shut down for a month or less can usually reopen with around 76% of their clients coming back right away, and a 5-8% "surge" of new clients. But if they're closed for longer than a month, those numbers--and hope--drop precipitously. US data predicts over 70% of gyms won't reopen at all (this includes big chains with huge overhead--the numbers are better for microgyms, studios and CrossFit boxes.) 3. Covid is not spread through gyms--especially not smaller microgyms or studios. Most of those gyms are cleaner than your house is, because of high-frequency cleaning and high-efficiency air exchange. 4. The most dangerous part of Covid is comorbidity risk. If you're already sick with Type II diabetes or heart disease or other frailty, Covid is much more deadly. The answer to almost all of these comorbidities is exercise, diet and lifestyle change. The best way to change your exercise, your diet and your lifestyle is through coaching. Your gym needs you. But not as much as you need your gym. I own a gym; my family is also in self-isolation. To stay stress-free, injury-free and one-last-cookie-free, I have coaches who guide me every day. Do what you can with what you have, and thank goodness you're not a politician right now!
All the best to you, your team and your family! I wish you Health, Happiness and Prosperity in the New Year!
