Dear Gymnastics Ontario Community, It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Oleksandr (Sasha) Zavadych. Sasha was recently awarded the Gymnastics Ontario Career Coaching Award which recognizes an extraordinary gymnastics coach who unknowingly touches hearts and changes lives. A legend in the MAG community. Sasha coached countless athletes in the Ottawa area, leaving a legacy of excellence with his athletes over his career. He will be deeply missed. ... Our condolences to his family and loved ones.

*FEATURE* Gymnastics Ontario Special Achievement Award CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS YEAR’S AWARD RECIPIENT OF THE GENE SUTTON SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD, ANGEL CROSSMAN! This award for outstanding volunteer service is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution of an exceptional nature to the Sport of Gymnastics in Ontario for at least twenty (20) years.... . . . Angel Crossman’s two daughters trained at the Burlington Gymnastics Club and Angel became a strong volunteer not only for the BGC but also within our Ontario gymnastics community. She has served as a board member for the BGC since 1987 (33 years) and was president for six years. She also served on the then Central Region Gymnastics Committee for five years, acting as Treasurer for four. Within BGC she has acted as chairman of several of our board standing committees and has rewritten our club constitution. She was an original writer of the club’s policies and procedures, and most recently was in charge of their complete revision which was a four-year project. Her other organizational skills were directed to the planning of gymnastics competitions. She has worked on and chaired organizing committees for all levels of gymnastics competitions which include numerous qualifiers, Provincial Championships, National Championships as well as the local Burlington Gymnastics Club Spring Cup. It should be especially noted that she was Co-Meet Director of the 1990 Provincial Championships, member of the organizing committee for the 1998 Canadians in Hamilton and hosting chair of the Canadians in both 2004 (Mississauga) and 2009 (Hamilton). In addition, Angel volunteered at the 2000 Gym Challenge in Mississauga and the 1994 and 1995 Soapberry and Subway World Gymnastics Challenge in Hamilton. Continuing in the role of tireless volunteer, Angel has been a member of the Gymnastics Ontario Board of Directors from 1997 to the present day (23 years) having served as President for six years. She has served on the Gymnastics Ontario Policy and Procedures Committee as well as on the Human Resources Committee for the past 12 years. Congratulations Angel! . . . This annual award is to recognize an extraordinary gymnastics coach who unknowingly touches hearts and changes lives, as the beloved Mr. S did. The recipient of this award must have coached for a minimum of twenty (20) years.... . . . Discipline: Men’s Artistic After 45 years of dedicated service to the sport of gymnastics, Sasha Zavadych is setting his sights on a well-deserved retirement and looks forward to spending time with his family. Sasha began his career in 1975 at gym Zarya in Ukraine, and in 2000 he made the brave decision to come to Canada to further his coaching career and share his knowledge. From 2000-2020 Sasha’s family remained in Ukraine as he continued to help Ontario develop high level provincial and national level men’s artistic athletes. The Ottawa Gymnastics Centre was very fortunate to have acquired his expertise and knowledge in 2015 and has benefited ever since. His dedication to the sport of gymnastics and to his athletes has not gone unnoticed and will be greatly missed not only by the OGC but by the entire gymnastics community. Sasha has successfully produced high level provincial and national athletes during his career. Highlights include: Former and current National Team members Casey Sandy and Samuel Zakutney Eastern Canadian champion Riley Gonzalez Sasha has also produced numerous Ontario provincial champions and many more talented athletes! Success and medals aside, his athletes have also grown into amazing individuals. This is due to his well-rounded approach to coaching, paying attention not only to the gymnasts skills but also to their mental and emotional growth, allowing them to be successful both inside and outside of the gym.
