New stamp honours Mary Riter Hamilton. Considered Canada’s first unofficial female battlefield artist, Mary Riter Hamilton produced hundreds of paintings, drawings and etchings depicting muddy WW1 battlefields, cemeteries and ruins in France and Belgium between 1919 and 1922. Mary and her husband Charles created their home together in Port Arthur, Ontario upon their marriage in 1889 operating a dry goods store. Tragically their loss of an infant in 1892 was followed by Charl...es’s death in 1893. Leaving Port Arthur, Mary went on to develop as an artist and exhibit her work in both Canada and Europe. Her 1906 painting Maternity, which she bequeathed to the City of Port Arthur, is prominently displayed in Thunder Bay City Hall. Maternity honours the memory of the child she lost in Port Arthur. You can read more about the life of Mary Riter Hamilton in the City of Thunder Bay’s Women’s History Month web exhibit. https://www.thunderbay.ca/.../mary-riter-hamilton.aspx See more

Find your creative place in celebration of this year’s Ontario Culture Days, a national celebration that sees millions of Canadians participate in arts and cult...ural events. The annual initiative, celebrated from September 25 to October 25, will look a little different this year, but there is no shortage of local COVID-safe programming available. As a city rich in arts and culture, Culture Days provide ample opportunities for our citizens to come together and express themselves through a variety of creative activities planned, said Mayor Bill Mauro. I encourage everyone to get involved, and I look forward to seeing what our community comes up with this year. Indoors, outdoors and online, many cultural organizations throughout the city are hosting activities including Definitely Superior Art Gallery, Thunder Bay Public Library, Thunder Bay Art Gallery, Thunder Bay Museum, Community Arts & Heritage Education Project (CAHEP), and Painted Turtle Art Shop. CAHEP’s Porch Dances project, in partnership with the City of Thunder Bay, asks the community to put on their dancing shoes. Porch Dances, as a neighbourhood initiative, encourages friends and neighbours to dance together from afar. Participants will have time to learn a short dance piece to perform and are asked to record themselves and submit a video to be included in a compilation video that will be released in the last week of Culture Days. "Culture Days initiatives are a chance for the community to be creative, said Louisa Costanzo, the City’s Cultural Development and Events Supervisor. "Creativity is crucial, especially during this pandemic; we need to think outside the box and try new things. We encourage everyone to take part in the activities happening over the next month." The City of Thunder Bay Cultural Development and Events section has also partnered with Willow Springs Creative Centre for a multitude of inspiring art activities. This programming will run in-person as well as virtually, with a limited supply of free art kits available to participate from home. If you do not get a kit, the items required to take part in the project will be posted before the activity on Thunder Bay Culture and Events Facebook page. Other City of Thunder Bay activities include the continued opportunity to participate in the Digital Doors Open Thunder Bay Event and re-watch the summer online arts programming with CAHEP. For a full list of activities happening locally and for pre-registration, visit www.culturedays.ca and enter ‘Thunder Bay’ in the search bar at the top of the page. More information can also be found at www.thunderbay.ca/culturedays. #ONCultureDays #ONCD2020 #OntarioCultureDays
