The following children, all missing in January, have been located or returned under the Ananda Alert System during January 2020. Sadly two young boys 11 y/o Mar...k Leslie and 8 y/o Galen Buchanan were also found dead in January. We thank citizens for your continued support in sharing alerts and providing information to @Jamaica Constabulary Force and the #AnandaAlert Secretariat. Be reminded that persons are still considered missing until verified by the police.

ATTENTION: ALL SCHOOLS SUBJECT: MANAGEMENT OF CORONAVIRUS IN SCHOOLS Further to bulletins number 20 and 38 regarding preventative measures against Coronavirus ...that were disseminated on February 5, 2020 and March 3, 2020 respectively, this follow up bulletin seeks to provide additional information as we now move into the amber phase of the Education in Emergencies support system. The Ministry remains confident that all School Administrators are making use of the precautionary information being disseminated to mitigate against anyone becoming infected or affected by COVID-19. School Administrators are reminded to implement all the preventative measures without compromise as detailed in the most recent release from the Ministry of Health as attached as well as the document from UNICEF detailing guidance to protect children and support safe school operations. All primary schools were provided with funding to supplement operational grants and all schools would by now procure additional sanitary materials for use in the preventative measures outlined above. Where additional support is required, school administrators are being asked to contact their Regional Director immediately. In light of the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Jamaica, please be assured that the Ministry of Health and Wellness has taken all the necessary steps to control the spread of the virus by quarantining all the persons who have come in direct contact with the infected person subsequent to their contact tracing procedures. Where School Administrators are made aware of any person within their institution who has come in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case and has not exhibited any symptoms, the person should be advised to seek medical attention and be guided by the medical advice. School Administrators are being advised to alert and prepare teachers and caregivers to support children’s continued learning where school operation is disrupted. The Ministry is in the process of preparing various types of electronic materials to be used alongside what is already available on the Ministry’s websites. In addition, Administrators are asked to bring the following to the attention of their teachers in the event that schools may have to close: Utilize the online learning kits available on the Ministry’s websites PEP Practice booklets and PEP Camp Workbooks can be accessed on the Ministry’s Website. School leaders are being asked to create online/social media spaces to facilitate communication and sharing of learning materials eg. WhatsApp. Teachers who are trained in using online learning platforms should be asked to prepare learning materials using this medium. Schools equipped with School Management Systems to support learning and on-going communication must engage these facilities Students equipped with tablets with appropriate content uploaded to support learning should be encouraged to continue their learning should they be out of school. Media broadcast at specific times in each day on varied learning episodes and coping strategies for those in need of psycho-social care will be provided through the Public BroadCasting Corporation of Jamaica (PBCJ) We are mindful that the novelty and uncertainty of this global issue may heighten emotional distress and increase anxiety and so we implore school leaders to: Be a conduit of accurate data by verifying information via the relevant government agencies. Be assured that all decisions concerning schools will be delivered via already established channels. Make decisions based on data and engage Peer and Education Officers support for unusual or challenging situations. Encourage sharing of resilience stories and success that persons/nation have accomplished in weathering an outbreak. Balance self-preservation and duty of care. Take care of self while taking care of others. The Trauma Team from the Ministry is available to provide counselling and psycho-social and emotional support where required The Ministry remains grateful for all educators who continue to preserve and uphold the delivery of educational services despite impending challenges related to COVID19. For further information or queries, please contact the Ministry of Health and Wellness Public Relations & Communications Unit at 876-633-8174 and your regional office.

3 years ago, I was on a train and noticed a boy selling earrings. I bought a pair from him, and asked him if he goes to school. He said, ‘No didi, but I’m a pr...o at jumping! I can cartwheel, do hand-flips and somersaults because I spend so much time on trains swinging about!’ He touched my heart in such a way that ever since, every year on my birthday, I look forward to going to slums to meet kids there and celebrate -- I take a cake and school supplies for them. Then last year when I turned 19, I decided to join an NGO full time to be able to do more. I love my life now -- my days are all about waking up, meeting these children, spending time with them and teaching them. And, they get me the sweetest gifts. Just this Valentine’s Day, they gifted me a box of chocolates and said, ‘Didi, you are our valentine and we love you so much!’ But honestly, till date, the best gift they’ve given me is staying motivated and working hard to reach their goals. I still remember, this one time, it was raining heavily and I almost cancelled the study session with them. But they refused, and said, ‘Didi, can we please use your phone torchlight and study? We’ll sit under that bamboo roof!’ And there we all sat, cozied up under a leaky bamboo roof, taking notes and reading together. It’s amazing how much they’ve excelled -- they couldn’t even read before, and now in just a year they read so much that I’m running out of story books to give them! I can’t explain how good that feels. Every child I’ve met has this eagerness to learn, the only thing missing is the opportunity -- and that’s what I’m going to give them everyday. Even if that means spending 10 hours in a tent teaching them, rain or shine -- every minute’s worth it. See more
