Our profession has lost a remarkable person. William McGuiness passed away on September 19, 2020. Bill was the original Prosthetic and Orthotic program head and instructor at BCIT. Bill was responsible for developing a program that educated hundreds of P&O students. His impact on our profession is unparalleled. From an infant receiving a hip orthosis to an elderly patient using a prosthesis, Bill has his hand in all our treatments. Bill was always smiling. He was a caring ...compassionate man how was always smiling. Bill leaves behind his wife Catherine, daughter Megan, son Patrick and their families. Sadly BC has very poor coverage. What is covered is basic. If you need an orthosis (brace), there is no coverage for over 18 years of age and extremely limited for those under 18.

OPC congratulates the government for passing the Accessible Canada Act and all those who had a hand in contributing to its development. This really is a first ...step of many that need to occur to address the needs of the disabled. Today a lady and her mother and husband came in to our Home Depot telling us that the insurance company may or may not pay for their little boy’s walker, so th...ey went on the internet and found plans to make one out of PVC pipe. My store manager heard about this and we went over to them looked at their plans and said, ‘We got this.’ So, we started putting it together told the family to go and enjoy ice cream and come back in an hour. Other associates started jumping in and when the family came back it was done. Everyone was crying to see Logan walk around with the biggest smile on his face. When the family tried to pay us, we said, ‘No way this one is on us.’ Thanks to all that help and for being a blessing to this family and to this little guy. Credit: Jeffrey Anderson
