Such a life-changing journey together with so many incredible and resilient folks all over Haida Gwaii from North to South. TEN YEARS of midwifery on Haida Gwaii!!! WOW! Jayde will always be my marker in beginning this work here, and the marker for the Islands in the MANY years of midwifery ahead!

https://www.bclocalnews.com//haida-gwaii-joins-forum-on-s/ Our program on Haida Gwaii has come a long way since 2000 through our work together with our communities, dedicated providers, and supports on and off Island. A timely reminder that we are still here and not to take these few remaining services for granted. Proud of our Haida Gwaii team and the dedicated folks across BC still providing incredible maternity care in these small communities.

Registered midwife Celina Laursen has been providing midwifery services on Haida Gwaii since 2009. Here she is discussing bringing birth back to the community w...ith royals Kate and William. Laursen shared this backgrounder on midwifery care on the Islands: "Previous to opening Haida Gwaii Midwifery in 2009, many women and families had to leave the Islands to birth [and GPs, health researchers, birth workers and advocates worked hard to bring birth back to the community]. Since 2009, residents have had a stable option to birth on Island. Soon after midwifery was offered on Haida Gwaii, 100% of women chose to access midwifery and just under half decided to birth on Island. In recent years there has been a shift from solo midwifery practice to a collaborative midwifery-led model with physicians and other healthcare providers on Haida Gwaii. As of November 2015, with the assistance of additional funding from First Nations Health Authority and the support of Northern Health, Shannon Greenwood, RM and long term birth worker and advocate on the Island took over midwifery care of the communities of Masset and Old Masset on the north end of the Island creating a two midwife model making midwifery for Haida Gwaii more sustainable longer term." Thank you for your wonderful work serving rural, remote and First Nations communities, Celina Laursen!
