Haida Gwaii Institute 26.01.2021

Dr. Dan McCarthy has teamed up with four other knowledgable and experienced instructors to deliver HGI's Online Professional Development Program: Co-Management from February 8 to 12, 2021. Dan is an Associate Professor in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability (SERS) at the University of Waterloo and the Director of the Waterloo Institute of Social Innovation and Resilience (WISIR). His transdisciplinary academic background has focused on exploring the utili...ty of complex systems-based approaches to understanding and intervening in linked social-ecological systems. He has strong research interests and partnerships that relate to fostering adaptive capacity, social and environmental justice and social innovation in the field of environmental policy. He works closely with several Indigenous groups in northern and southern Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia as well as conservation and environmental movement organizations in the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario. Meet Dr. Hilary Thorpe, another member of our knowledgable and experienced instructor team leading HGI's Online Professional Development Program: Co-Management from February 8 to 12, 2021. Hilary is the Pacific Region Marine Coordinator for Parks Canada. From 2012 to 2020, she was the Marine Project Manager at Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site, where she worked closely with the Archipelago Management Board t...o develop the Gina ’Waadluxan KilGuhlGa Land-Sea-People Management Plan. Prior to joining Parks, Hilary was a postdoctoral fellow at UBC and Academic Director for the Haida Gwaii Higher Education Society. She holds a B.Sc. in Ecology and a Ph.D. in Forestry, both from the University of Toronto. Hilary lives in Revelstoke, BC, with her partner and their two children. Suudahl Cindy Boyko is one member of our knowledgable and experienced instructor team leading HGI's Online Professional Development Program: Co-Management from February 8 to 12, 2021. Cindy has served as the Haida Nation co-chair on the Gwaii Haanas Archipelago Management Board for the past twenty years, where she has overseen signing of the Gwaii Haanas Marine Agreement and establishment of Gwaii Haanas National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, the raising of the Legacy Pol...e at Hlk’yah GawGa Windy Bay and signing of the Gina ’Waadluxan KilGuhlGa Land-Sea-People Management Plan. She sat as an elected representative on the Council of the Haida Nation for nine years and, prior to that, was manager of the Haida Gwaii Watchmen Program. She is also a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the Haida Gwaii Institute. Cindy lives in HlGaagilda Skidegate with her cocker spaniel, Kona. Meet one of our Winter 2021 Online Instructors! My name is Gid yahk’ii (Sean Young) a proud member of the Haida Nation. I am from the Gaag’yals iiGawaay, Raven clan of ’uuna Llnagaay (Skedans). Currently, I am the Manager/Curator of Collections and Lab of Archaeology at Saahlinda Naay Saving Things House (Haida Gwaii Museum) at Kay Llnagaay. I’m also an educated and trained field archaeologist and have been consulting on Haida Gwaii since 1997. I have been a instructo...r and guest lecturer for the Haida Gwaii Institute's Natural Resource Studies and Marine Conservation semester for the past three years. I’ve also worked for the Haida Gwaii Watchmen Program since 2004 as a cultural ambassador and caretaker living in ancient Haida villages, cultural sites and UNESCO world heritage site SGang Gwaay Llnagaay (Ninstints) for up to 3 months every summer which are located within Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve Haida Heritage Site. Sean's course (Ocean People, Culture, and Tradition) will be an in-depth study of Traditional Haida Culture from the ‘pre-contact’ era before 1774, to modern day 21st century Haida Culture. The focus of our learning will be on the relationship between the culture of the Haida people and their marine environment; and traditional and modern approaches to management of marine resources. Meet Don AhnAhnsisi McIntyre, lead instructor and curriculum development team lead with HGI's Professional Development Program: Navigating Canadian Law & Policy Regarding Indigenous Peoples. Don (he/him/his) is Ojibway of the Wolf Clan from Timiskaming First Nation. His Anishinaabemowin name is AhnAhnsisi. He has been adopted, in the Potlatch, by the Beaver Clan of the Nisga’a and carries the Blackfoot name Makóyoomaahkaa. Don is an Assistant Professor at the University of Le...thbridge in the Dhillon Business School. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Waterloo where he is affiliated with the Waterloo Institute of Social Innovation and Research (WISIR). Don McIntyre is a sought-after speaker, presenting on Indigenous Art and Traditions, Law, Socio-Legal Pluralism, Social Innovation, Law and Society, Business, Governance, Colonization, Indigenization, Project Management, Strategic Planning, Leadership, Management, Negotiations and Treaty. We are still accepting registrations for the online professional development program: Navigating Canadian Law & Policy Regarding Indigenous Peoples. Participants will attend daily one-hour and a half synchronous sessions Monday Friday at 1pm Pacific/4pm Eastern (10 in total) between October 26th to November 6th, 2020; and time on their own during the week and on weekends to do activities that will prepare them for each synchronous session. This online professional developme...nt program is an opportunity for representatives from diverse sectors and communities of practice to come together to develop understanding, tools and strategies for successful collaboration within the context of recognizing and upholding the rights of Indigenous Peoples of Canada. Program Fee: $1,260 Residents of Haida Gwaii are eligible for the Gwaii Trust Society Continuing Education Grant: Short Term Courses. Haida Gwaii Institute also offers a limited number of bursaries for both residents of Haida Gwaii, and non-residents that is meant to be complimentary funding, and not core assistance funding. Congratulations to Dr. Tracy Morton on winning the 2020 BC Rural Health Award of Excellence in Rural Medicine: Lifetime Achievement! "Dr. Morton believes that health care in a rural environment can be as good as anywhere in Canada. His professional interests include specializations in general practitioner (GP) oncologist, novel uses of point-of-care ultrasound, text-messaging (and other technologies) in primary care, and emergency medicine." HGI is proud to have Dr. Morton share his passion and innovation as a member of its Advisory Council and a Director on the Haida Gwaii Higher Education Society Board.
