Postponed: First Aid Course Haida Gwaii Recreation will be postponing our upcoming Emergency first aid course scheduled for March 2nd in Masset. Given the heightened risk of COVID-19 in our community, we will be moving the course to a later date. Information is released on Friday’s (the date this course is scheduled) by Northern Health and we’d like to take time to re-evaluate, given the uncertainties. ... We do also want to assure participants that we have a strong safety plan in place through Red Cross and our instructor has provided successful & safe programming in our communities since November. Meredith Adams is our local instructor who has gone above and beyond to ensure safety in these programs during the pandemic, reported often to us by past participants. Our venues are community halls with venue safety plans in place, who have weekly cleaning and sanitization schedules for the space, and we have sourced ample PPE (gloves, masks) + cleaners & disinfectants for the instructor and participants. Participants also keep their materials (e.g. books, face mask) and we’ve further reduced any shared equipment. Most important to us is transparency, educating participants in our protocols and on course requirements. While there is minimal risk of exposure during the majority of the course, there are portions where participants will work with another person to learn CPR & AED on a mannequin. This is necessary for properly teaching the content. Each participant is provided with their own pocket face mask as required by Red Cross, to further reduce risk. However, when COVID-19 is clearly circulating in our communities, we’ve come to an agreement with the instructor that it’s best to delay until we can confirm a decline in COVID-19 cases on island. Haawa - Thank You for your support and understanding. Stay safe and well.

Sharing a fundraiser for a local resident who's been a part of our HG Rec family! Marian was Recreation Committee chair for the Village of Masset for a few years and was on our Commission way back when it was still "QCI Rec". She's even worked as our bookkeeper before she became disabled from complications with colon cancer in 2009.

Haida Gwaii Recreation has procedures in place to keep the risk of spreading COVID-19 in our communities low. Our safety plan, reviewed and approved by our regional Environmental Health Officer, is available on our website at www.hgrec.com/covid-19/. We continue to update procedures as public health orders evolve. There is plenty that WE have done to keep you, your child/ren & the community safe as we come together to recreate. This includes: - Reducing programming to regis...tered-only - Adjusting to low-intensity activities only - Reducing class sizes while increasing venue size - Training our instructors in safety procedures - Mandatory pre-screening of attendees - Mandatory masking between activity - Creating safety plans for each program - Reducing shared equipment & purchasing more - Providing PPE, cleaners and disinfectants to programs - Equipping instructors with speakers & wireless microphones Now, what can YOU do to keep you, your children, other registrants & the community safe? Check our our *10 Steps to Recreate Safely* Review the definition of *Low Intensity Exercise* Review the *Rate of Perceived Exertion* Index Review the masking requirements at our programs Staying safe is a shared responsibility. Like all retailers & recreation facilities, we do our best to reduce risk. Please do your best to abide by these new procedures to ensure we can recreate safely and respectfully together on Haida Gwaii. Questions? E-mail [email protected] or call 250-626-5652 We currently have all dance classes for youth in Masset suspended for 1 week and we will review resumption of these programs at a later date. Other low-intensity adult programs are resuming as usual at this time. We are regularly monitoring local notices and recommendations from the health authority. Participants will be advised of any changes to programming as they come.

We sure appreciate the staff at Sight & Sound Terrace that went above and beyond to help us source audio recording & podcasting equipment for our upcoming program! We've got H4n recorders and podcasting packs coming to keep some young men busy this winter. We truly appreciate these small businesses in the northwest that make this process easy, especially in light of COVID-19. This program is made possible with funding from Gwaii Trust Society's Community Innovation program. We'll be sharing more about our newest program instructor soon!

Don't forget to sign up for our courses! Two scheduled in the north, 2 in the south. You MUST recertify while you have current certification or you have to re-do the full course.* Update on 12/18/2020: The Red Cross has updated the extended recertification window for its First Aid courses: Participant-level certificate holders with certifications that expire between March 1, 2020, and March 1, 2021 can attend a recertification course until March 31, 2021. This is an OFA Level 1 equivalent.

We are staying informed of evolving public health orders with thanks to BCRPA. Still, no guidelines yet for the resumption of our low-intensity adult programs (expect that later in the week). Most programs have been temporarily suspended/cancelled until the new year and in process of refunding/moving to virtual only. Low-intensity programs by Provincial standards include yoga, pilates, light weightlifting, adult dance classes, stretching or strengthening and Tai-Chi. From th...Continue reading

This next athlete is regarded as the most successful soccer player to ever compete for Canada! Christine Sinclair is Captain of Canada's Women's soccer team from Burnaby, B.C. Olympic bronze medal winner, this year she scored for the second time against St. Kitts and Nevis at the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship (her 185th goal), making her the all-time leading scorer in international soccer history, man or woman. She scored her first International goal in th...e 2000 Algarve Cup with the senior national team at 16 years old on Norway’s Bente Nordby, then considered the best goalie in the world. Did you know that Canada has lost only 20 times in the 131 games in which Sinclair has scored? Despite her love of winning, she's cited as a humble and strong team player that has challenged how the world perceives women's sports. Sinclair is one of the first females feature by EA Sports on a FIFA cover in North America, sharing the spotlight on FIFA 16 Canadian edition with Lionel Messi. Can we just mention her net worth is valued around $2 million ($380,000 salary in 2020) while Messi's is upwards of $1 billion ($126 million in 2020)? We didn't read much about her need to make more money, only her efforts to advocate for more equitable coverage of womxn's sport in the media. LA Times asked whether she picked the right sport to which she responded, I think so." But she would have wasted her time, she added, if the only thing she left behind was a scoring record. The game has changed night and day, she said. I remember my first World Cup. In Canada and around the world, no one knew what was happening. Last year’s World Cup in France, it was absolutely massive the attention it got worldwide. For me the biggest thing has been the opportunities that are now available for female soccer players. Day 2 of featuring high performance Canadian wxman athletes! Learn more about how these individuals are changing the playing field and advocating for a more equitable and accessible future in sport. Meet Shoshauna Gauvin, a former university-level rugby player at Queen's. After serving her country in the Canadian Armed Forces and now transitioning into a career in engineering following graduation, she is looking forward to a life with rugby to provide community and sense ...of place. Shoshauna is a trans woman who has disclosed her transition to the world. She shares the unique challenges she has faced adapting from mens to womens rugby teams after hormone replacement therapy. Finding her sense of place in sport was not always clear, which included ensuring she met the International Olympic Committee's trans policies to compete. When inclusive policies from Rugby Canada and U Sports followed, she began competing again. Gauvin has shared her story to challenge the proposed trans-women-ban policy currently being considered at World Rugby. Read more: http://ow.ly/ODIG50CARk4 There are plenty of trans women who are 145 pounds and can only lift 85 pounds. By being trans, it doesn’t make you automatically stronger. Read more here about her journey: https://www.outsports.com//shoshauna-gauvin-rugby-trans-at What is the point of sport? To me, it’s not just to win a championship. Self-improvement, community building and other purposes are all important. For me, mental health is significant particularly as a soon-to-be veteran. It’s problematic to remove those benefits from someone based on faulty evidence. Learn more: International Gay Rugby: http://ow.ly/Tw2150CARmQ Follow Shoshauna on Instagram @shoshigauvin

The future of sport & recreation is equitable & accessible! For the month of December, we're going to share stories of high-performance womxn athletes across Canada. Faced with barriers to participation and acceptance in their sport, these individuals push boundaries and in their pursuits act as role models for the next generation. First up is Spencer O'Brien, Canadian Olympic Snowboarder. She was born in Alert Bay and grew up in Courtenay, B.C. She is of Haida/Kwakwakw'wak...w descent. She found her passion at the age of 11 on the halfpipe but pursued snowboard slopestyle. Did you know? In 2013 she competed at her first FIS World Championships where she captured the gold medal and qualified for the debut of slopestyle as an event at the winter Olympics in 2014. Almost 7 months before attending 2014 Sochi and advancing to the Olympic finals, she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Despite not winning gold at Sochi (which she did not attribute to her condition) she perservered in her sport with the help of medication to manage the disease, winning slopestyle gold at the 2016 X Games in Aspen (her sixth career X Games medal). She also went on to compete in Ladies' slopestyle and the debut of big air at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. "I am proud of my heritage and where I come from, and I know there are so many more incredible Indigenous athletes who need to be given a chance, an opportunity to be involved in sport. I strongly believe that more work needs to be done by sport organizations across Canada to ensure Indigenous athletes have the opportunity to participate in the sports they lovewhether that participation leads to a pursuit of excellence in their given sport or the desire to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. A great example of this is Canada Snowboard’s Indigenous Snowboard program delivered in partnership with the First Nations Snowboard Association."
