Kayd (Sitka Spruce) has had an important cultural role Haida Gwaii for generations due to its wide-ranging uses; from halibut hooks and waterproof baskets to medicinal purposes. Recently, there has been renewed interest in spruce tips for their culinary value. The citrus-like flavor lends itself well to desserts, savory dishes, and specialty cocktails. Ts'aagul (ferns) have many different uses in traditional Haida culture. The rhizomes of the tsgwal (licorice fern) have an especially sweet taste. It was often chewed fresh for its sugary juice, or boiled as a sweetener.
