Lieutenant Thomas Alexander Rowat Born August 19, 1878. Died June 28, 1917 at the age of 38. Lieutenant Rowat enlisted on January 14, 1915 in Haileybury, and served in the 38th Battalion of the Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment). ... Pilot Officer Robert Douglas Mutch Died November 17, 1943 at the age of 20. Private Officer Mutch served in the 405th Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force. ... He was the son of Douglas A. Private François Langlois Born February 8, 1897. Died June 8, 1918 at the age of 21. Private Langlois enlisted on April 13, 1916 in Haileybury, and served in the 22nd Battalion Division of the Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment). ... He stated being named Frank, born in Grande-Rivière in 1895 when he enlisted. He was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous bravery in May 1918. Private Langlois was laid to rest at the Wailly Orchard Cemetery in Pas to Calais, France. Lest we forget. Source: The Canadian Virtual War Memorial (Veteran Affairs Canada).
Captain Carleton Carroll Green Born June 20, 1888. Killed in action on September 26, 1916 at the age of 27. Captain Green enlisted with the Algonquin Rangers, 97th Regiment in December 1914 and later transferred to the 37th Battalion and to the 13th Montreal Highlanders. He went overseas with the 37th Battalion in 1915 and was in the trenches in early 1916. ... He was survived by his wife, Mabel McKinnon of Haileybury, Ontario and two daughters. Meet Paula Oslund - Director. Paula has lived most of her life here in Northern Ontario, where she raised her two sons. She worked in nursing for 37 years. Over the years, Paula has been involved in the community through the Rotary Club, the IODE, as well as the Haileybury Heritage Museum. She has a heart for volunteering and is ready and happy to help wherever and whenever she can.
Meet Kaline Woods Secretary. Kaline is a local elementary teacher with an admiration for history. She completed her honours specialization degree in history at Nipissing University, as well as her Bachelor of Education Degree. While in university, she dedicated 4 summers to working as a student at the museum, planning several children’s day camps, providing tours to the public, and organizing fundraisers and events. The museum means so much to Kaline, as she has developed a passion for local history, as well as an admiration for those involved. History in our area is so fascinating and the stories are so captivating. She hopes to continue sharing these stories with community members and tourists and to educate others, all while preserving local history and artifacts for many years to come!
Meet Robert Ritchie - Director. Rob enrolled in the business administration program at Northern College, Haileybury Campus. While there he formed a business club that set up scholarships for the new business administration graduates. He was also Vice President of the students council, and got the ball rolling for the Haileybury School of Mines' 80th Anniversary celebrations. In addition, he served as the Vice Skip for the varsity curling team that represented the school at the All-Ontario playdowns. Rob graduated with both a marketing and an accounting designation with honours and was on the Dean’s List. History was his best subject in secondary school and he developed an interest in Haileybury's rich heritage when his wife, Monique, worked alongside Chris Oslund at the museum.
Meet Curt Arthur - Director. Following a 34-year career with Ontario’s correctional services that started in Haileybury in 1986, eventually leading to assignments as a Director, Executive Lead and Assistant Deputy Minister, Curt is excited to return to his Haileybury roots in retirement. As the owners of one of Haileybury’s Ghosts of the Hardy Boys houses for the past 50 years the Arthur Family have been long-time fans, supporters and followers of northern heritage and history. Curt is excited to join the Museum Board of Directors this year and looks forward to helping to tell the story of Haileybury and Northern Ontario.
Meet Monique Skinner-Ritchie - Director. Monique graduated from the Haileybury School of Mines/Northern College with a Business Administration Diploma with honours, where she made the Dean’s List, and also received an Outstanding Achievement Award. During her second year of college, she was also an active member of the business club, all while raising her three children at home. Monique has worked for Temiskaming Child Care for the last 17 years. Prior to that she worked at t...he MP’s office. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the board. Monique, along with her parents, have always been interested in Haileybury’s history. She worked at the museum for a year, assessing artifacts and worked alongside Chris Oslund researching and documenting the stories of the survivors of the Great Fire of 1922, including her first mother in law Hazel Skinner.
Meet John Barrie Vice-Chair. John has been a member of the board for the Haileybury Heritage Museum for many years, volunteering at almost every event since he joined. He has always shown a keen interest in history. John has a wide range in knowledge, as he has a BA degree in Anthropology and History from Laurentian University, as well as a diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Mines Maintenance) from the Haileybury School of Mines. He developed a career in draughting and modelling, and also served as a property manager. His hobbies include modelling (the more complex, the better), and reading a wide range of fields.
Meet Brian Dobbs - Chair. Brian has been an instrumentation college professor at Northern College’s Haileybury School of Mines Campus for the last 30 years. His passion to preserve local history and serve his community is reflected in numerous positions over the years including municipal councillor, Chair of the Haileybury Centennial Committee, President of the Temiskaming-Abitibi Heritage Association, President of the Haileybury School of Mines Alumni Association, Chair of ...the Haileybury Special Events Committee, and a member of the museum for nearly 30 years. Brian has authored a local Haileybury history book and enjoys photography, spending time at his cottage in the summer, and is now a proud new grandparent. The Haileybury Heritage Museum is, and as it was for his late father Sheldon, an important component of our community in the preservation of our rich local history. The museum is a vital link to our past and Brian enjoys working with everyone associated to help make it a welcoming place and to provide a memorable experience for all its visitors.
Looking for an activity to do during these times of social distancing? Why not participate in the 2020 Ghost of the Hardy Boys’ Short Story Writing Contest! We have extended the date of the contest to encourage more students to participate! It is open to students from grades 1-12, anywhere from Temagami to Kirkland Lake! ...
