Do your curls fall flat after you spend so long trying to style it? You get all ready for the day and by the time you get to work they’re gone? There’s a couple suggestions I have for you: 1. Technique. When curling your hair whether it’s with a straightener, curling iron or wand you have to have the right technique for the curls to last. 2. You need to use products, whether that’s a mousse that has hold or a setting spray you can put on before curling (NOT hairspray!). With ...the west coast humidity you need something to help hold your style together. 3. Speaking of hairspray, you can layer that on after but if the other steps aren’t followed it probably still won’t last. If you find that you struggle constantly with curling your hair ask me next time your in my chair and we can figure out what’s going wrong

Hey IG friends! I’ve got some new faces following me so I want to take a moment to introduce myself. I’m Carlee and I, like you all, have many job titles. I am a blonding and balayage specialist, a licensed-red seal cosmetologist and began in 2012, a friend, a fur mama, a chocolate lover and best of all, a fiancé to my best friend. When I’m not behind the chair you’ll find me exploring the local trails with our pup Amelia, searching for my next diy project or watching the su...n rise. I’ve always known I wanted to be a stylist, every time I got to visit the salon as a child I thought it was the best. I would practice by doing my moms hair and always tried new things on my own. I am truly happiest when I’m in the salon and pride myself in taking the time to connect with each and every person who sits in my chair. All of my clients are given a free styling lesson at their first appointment so that they always know how to recreate their look at home. So I confessed that I am obsessed with all things chocolate, so tell me what’s your favourite treat?

From winter to summer balayage For this colour I used only hand painting, I love this technique because it create the most seamless blend from natural to light. There is no root melting needed and the fade out will be fine. For her maintenance she will come back every 6-8 weeks for a haircut & toner to refresh the colour of the blonde. She can let her balayage grow for many months or choose to alternate with her maintenance appointments.... I like to call it a choose your own adventure kind of look because it’s so customizable to your needs.

What a difference a wave makes! Have you ever noticed as your scrolling through hair photos that most of them are curled especially when they are showcasing balayage or dimensional blonde? There is a reason, it’s because when the hair is curled you see all of that beautiful dimension vs when it’s straight you only see what’s on the surface. Think 3D vs 2D. That means when we do our consult I will always ask you how you style your hair so that I know the best way to place the colour.

When you go from dark to light this is the transition you can expect to have. This particular client started off with virgin hair also so you can imagine what the process might look like if you start with a history of colour. Each of these sessions took upwards of 4 hours to complete. When you put lightener onto the hair it reveals the underlying pigment which are red orange... yellow depending on which level your at. Each of these have to be passed by in order to achieve your blonde dreams and this takes patience in order to maintain the integrity of your hair. See more

My favourite part about meeting each of you is getting to know you more while you’re in my chair, so I’m going to share some fun facts about myself: I’m 26 years young I’ve lived in BC for 2 years now I’m a enneagram type 7 (Enthusiast)... I have a fear of I have a dog and two cats My new hobby is diy-ing and up cycling old furniture/decor, and creating macrame Sweet treats > salty Being in nature calms my soul Let me know, do we have anything in common?

The ultimate sun-kissed look Did you know the definition of balayage is a technique where the lightener is painted on to create a graduated, natural looking highlight. Basically where the sun would naturally hit and lighten your hair. Balayage has become such a buzz word over time and is used to describe many different looks. Which is fine, we are all artists! Just remember the next time you are telling your stylist what you want, balayage is a technique and your desired outcome might not always be achievable with traditional balayage.

Transforming from summer to winter! We added some more dimension back into her hair and toned down the blonde to a nice, rich light brown that blends perfectly with her natural hair

Hair by Carlee 27.09.2020

Helloooo fall We turned her summer balayage into fall by enhancing her strawberry blonde natural colour and adding depth back into the hair. Those little pops of lowlight make those highlights shine!

Blowdrying with a paddle brush. Here’s how I do a quick dry while adding volume and keeping it smooth! I started with my hair 50% dry, push everything to one side and lift the brush up a bit to get volume at the root. Once the one side is mostly dry then use the brush under each section to smooth out the ends and repeat on the other side. If you have curlier/frizzier hair then start blowdrying before it gets 50% dry... So many of you are doing the big chop and I am here for it Almost so much that I want to do it myself How gorgeous is she, this cut totally suits her too! We did some soft dimensional balayage on her for some pops of brightness.

The triple waver is my new fav! It’s such a good way to add more volume to your hair and get that beachy look at the same time! Here is my quick tip when using:... Take a larger section and wave all the way down, then at the end take a small slice of hair off the top and bring it closer to the root for just a quick second. This gives the illusion of the wave all the way up and it’ll all lay together better. If you are wanting to get your hands on one of these we can put you on the list for our next order!

Swipe to see the before! My new favourite thing to do is add dimension back into a brunette when they’ve been lifted too much and had lots of sun exposure. You can see she was in need of a little TLC, so we added some lowlights to match her natural and brought her balayage back up and gave her a fresh toner to neutralize those brassy ends

Hair by Carlee 18.07.2020

I often get asked if I like to do brunette hair as well and the answer is ABSOLUTELY! I love creating low maintenance styles on every hair type. I was so happy to create this beautiful sun kissed look and it adds the perfect amount of dimension to her natural locks!

This balayage look was done all with foils. Depending on the starting point and the desired end result we can’t achieve the look by using traditional balayage (in one go) but we can still create a beautiful blend. Can you tell the difference between foils and balayage?

The top question now is how to go longer in between hair washes! There are many avenues to this question that I will get to, but today I want to share with you what my routine looks like. I already got my hair used to going a few days and covid helped me reach the day 7 mark but on a regular schedule I go anywhere from 4-6 days. That will depend on working out or sweating. Wash Day- always two shampoos! When you extend your time between shampoos you will need two shampoos, ...one to get the dirt, build up off and the second to do a good clean. Condition/ mask at the ends and rinse really well! I do a mix of blow drying and air drying and I’ll use mostly my two favourite products before drying. Day 2/4- Dry shampoo. My hair doesn’t start to get oily until day 3 but I will add some dry shampoo in there ahead of that so it’s soaking up oils before they become too bad. I will also add some oil to the ends over the week to keep it hydrated especially if I have to restyle with heat. As I get to day 4/5 I will do different hairstyles too like half clipped back, a bun, pony or braids! Tips: Get creative with hairstyles Start with the proper shampoo for you Dry shampoo Embrace a little natural oil

I am gushing over this blonde that I created last week This girl came to see me at the end of last year to put some balayage in her hair and that was her first time ever putting colour in her hair so we took it slow and just created a nice sun kissed look. This was our second session together and she was ready for more blonde! I am in love with the results Swipe to see the difference from her first session with me. @ Campbell River, British Columbia

Let’s talk maintenance! Everyone has a different preference and there are many, many options when it comes to hair colour but here are the general times between each service. Highlights: 6-12weeks. Appointment can be more highlights back up to the root, face frame highlights or a maintenance toner and root blend.... Balayage: 6-12 months. Appointment can be more balayage, face frame balayage/touch up, or maintenance toner refresh. Root coverage: 4-8 weeks. Appointment can be root coverage plus highlights/balayage or refresh the ends with a shine gloss. Haircuts: 6-8 weeks. These can be on their own, with a maintenance toner or added with a colour service.

Myth busting: hair products last forever. A few times I’ve heard things like oh I have some purple shampoo from the last time I was blonde. Which is great, I’m glad your not wasting however, all hair/beauty products have an expiry date! For most of them it is 12 months. How you know this is by looking on the back of a bottle there will be a little jar looking symbol with a number inside of it. Make sure you don’t leave your hair products in the back of the cupboard to go old. Are you surprised or did you already know that? @ Campbell River, British Columbia

If there is one thing I have learned coming out quarantine it is that each day you need to make time for yourself! Whether it’s to start you day on the right foot, get your energy high mid way through or to make yourself feel better after a not so good day (because we all have those). Better yet, implement all three! My best mornings are waking up with a cup of coffee with cashew milk in my favourite mug that has a cute saying on it.... Mid day pick me ups are putting on a feel good playlist and dancing it out or, bonus if the sun is shining then I’ll take my pup for a walk listening to that same music or a motivating podcast. My evening mood booster would be either a walk by the ocean or paddle boarding. I’d love to know what is something that you have learned over the past 2 months

I know you’re patiently waiting for the salons open up again. I mean summer hair right?! Where are my blonde at? Aspiring blondes? Low maintenance babes? Start scoping out some inspiration photos for when you can get an appointment. Remember that If your currently brunette it may take a couple sessions but we will get you there. If you are planning on booking a lightening session start doing the following things to ensure the healthiest outcome. 1. Use Olaplex! Start us...ing the treatment to strengthen or repair any existing damage on the hair. 2. Use less heat. Regardless if you’re using the best heat protector (which I must say is amazing) you should/can give your hair a break especially right now. 3. Wash your hair less. Yup, go as looong as you can in between. Let your natural oils come through so that your hair can stay hydrated. If you have any other questions for what you can do now to help keep your hair healthy before your next lightening service, feel free to ask me here!

Here is how I do my super quick messy bun! Sound on for explanation. Note: try not to open your bobby pins because you will end up grabbing more hair then it can handle and it won’t hold. The way you zig zag it in will grab enough hair and make sure that it’s secure. Let me know what you think! Do you have any great tips for doing a messy bun?

Hair by Carlee 16.03.2020

If I turn my hot tool to the hottest heat it'll work faster. FALSE What will work faster when heat styling is taking smaller, clean sections.... Most hair types do not need to have the hottest heat setting in order to be styled. You will be causing excess damage to your hair. My advice is to turn it down to medium-low (whichever number that might be for you) and move it up from there if need be. If you have fine hair I would try setting it at 350 or lower! Only if you have coarse or unruly hair should you go high then that. See more

Here’s a quick and simple half up style that you can use on day 2 curls or just to get your hair out of your face. This will work best on hair that already has some texture, mine is from braids the day before so it is an absolutely no heat style Grab the amount of hair that you want and start twisting it and wrapping at the same time. Tucking the ends in and securing with bobby pins. Notice that I don’t open the bobby pin (more on that later)

What should you do with your hair colour during quarantine? You are probably wondering what you’re going to do with those roots or how long it’ll be until they can be fixed, me too! The last thing I want for you is to be unhappy with the way your hair is looking. There are a few solutions and not all are the best but I am here for you. I will support you with whichever option you take. Option 1- Let it be. Just let the roots grow. Sure, it may look bad or the contrast is obvi...ous and yes it’ll take extra time in the salon to get back to where we were but your hair will be healthier, softer, and it’ll be ready to pick up where we left off. You are not alone, everyone in the world has roots right now and for the most part we are all at home and as soon as we get the green light to go back we will be booking you in! Option 2- Root Sprays, temporary colours, toning shampoo. Root touch up sprays are great to have if you want to spray around the hairline to hide any pesky greys. They all can be washed out and are not permanent. Option 3- Box colouring. Yup, I said it. I know you were thinking about it so we aren’t going to avoid it. Ok this is a slippery slope and can go 1 of 2 ways and if you absolutely feel the need to do it I want to help you. Box dyes are never 100% because they are one size fits all. They can be damaging, drying, and cause banding in the hair. If you are blonde, I’m going to recommend that you stay away from box dye because there can be so many risks with this. Before you reach for one contact me and I will help guide you! Just remember, whatever you choose to do now will alter what we do when you come back to the salon. If you choose the wrong box colour you may have hot roots or banding, so please decide which is better to live with. If you can hold off and have the patience for a root spray, I’d personally recommend that option. Regardless of what you choose, I will be there for you with my expertise to fix it for you when we come back. Even if that means it takes more sessions. I understand that you need to feel good when you look in the mirror and hope these options help get you through. Love y’all
