Lately I’ve been trying to keep my content as positive as I possibly can. Today however, I have some very sad news. Due to the uncertainty of this pandemic and how long social-distancing may last, I’ve had to reconsider my career as a self-employed hairstylist. Those of you who know me, know that my priorities are my clients, my fellow stylists and my trade. If you’ve been in the salon you’ve seen the tight knit bond between Ashley, Bronwyn, Morgan and myself. The at...mosphere at Salon Meraki is second to none. The relationships I’ve built within those 4 walls mean more to me than I can say. To my clients, whether you’ve seen me once or a hundred times, THANK YOU for supporting me along the way. I will miss our heartfelt chats and the way you say IS THAT ME?! when you see your after picture. This was not my plan for 2020 in fact, it wasn’t my plan at all. The control freak that I am is learning from this pandemic that you can’t always plan ahead or control the outcome. For the past week I’ve been allowing myself to grieve this loss while trying to figure out the right way to deliver the message. This is my passion. I hope to come back to it someday and reconnect with all of you, but for now I need to step away and do what’s right to support my family. As for your hair, because to me it’s not just hair, I know you will be desperate to find someone once salons are able to reopen. I am doing my best to create a list of referrals to offer you. Salon Meraki would love to keep you as a client but with the high volume of clients they’ve seen pre-pandemic, there are just not enough hours in the day to take on any more post-pandemic. This is my Mom. She’s a nurse and to say I’ve been worried about her would be an understatement. Am I worried about her getting sick? Yes, although I do think she has an immune system that could wipe almost anything out. She may pull through just fine, but what about her patients? ... On a long term care ward, the consequences of this virus could be dire. Frontline workers are risking their health every day. They now live fearing an outbreak and potentially losing patients they have formed deep connections and relationships with. Not to mention the concern for their own family and friends. Nurses have a habit of putting everyone else before themselves. Maintaining a strong backbone, getting the job done, then going home to cry into a pillow alone so no one sees the tears. If someone you love works in the healthcare system right now, I urge you to check in on them. Ask about their mental health, encourage them to open up. Tell them you appreciate them, because while the world is falling apart they are desperately trying to hold it together. They need support too. Lets talk about hard water. Hard water is full of minerals like calcium, magnesium and iron. Do you ever notice your hair feeling rough, tangly or brittle after washing it? ... Does your colour go brassy/orange within a few weeks after leaving the salon? Does your water turn your tub, toilet or sink a rusty brown colour over time? Do you feel dry/itchy when you get out of the shower or struggle with flaky scalp/eczema? It may be time to update your products & water filtration system. But I have a water softener. Water softeners work great for removing calcium & magnesium but not so great for removing ferrous iron which is the biggest problem for blondes. There are shampoos and conditioners specifically formulated to prevent the scummy buildup of minerals and soap in your hair. I recommend Malibu Hardwater Wellness and alternating with a purple shampoo for blondes. BUT it may be worth your while to invest in a shower head that filters out minerals and other harmful chemicals while you shower. Investing in a quality filtering shower head means: Less money on clarifying products Less money & time at the salon having your hair fixed Less damage Something to consider if you’re spending tons of $$$ on products and softener salt but still not seeing improvement! @ Salon Meraki See more

One last round of highlights before @unconventionalkaty brings her little one into the world . I get asked all the time if colouring your hair is safe during pregnancy. In my opinion there’s no right or wrong answer, this is a very personal choice. . If you’re going for colour on-scalp and you’re not sure, I would ask your stylist what product line they’re using. That way you can research the product/ingredients yourself and make an informed decision based on that... . If you’re highlighting/balayaging, the lightener doesn’t touch the scalp and the only real exposure you would have is toning at the sink . At the end of the day, I’ve seen plenty of expecting mothers colour/highlight their hair and have healthy babies. There’s no judgement if you do decide to continue colouring through your pregnancy and no hard feelings if you decide not to! .
